What are the differences between the 2019 & 2020 TRD offroad? I read somewhere that the 2020 does not have a CD player. Are there any other surprises?

2020 has Android Auto and Apple Car Play. Thats more important to me as the Entune solution before sucked. Google maps has offline maps for off road

No CD, but you get CarPlay/Android Auto. You also get auto-braking, lane departure warning (which SUCKS), and radar cruise (which is pretty nice).

From what I've gathered, the wiring is substantially different for 2020, right down to the fuse box. So adding things like a CB, hard-wired radar detector, powered subwoofer, etc. will take some figuring out.

Radar cruise? Is that the adaptive cruise control? I would like to have that. I drive between Las Vegas and Cedar City Utah at least twice a month.
It would be very handy on the interstate.

Correct. So far, I like it a lot. It's more subtle than the radar cruise on my wife's Mazda, which waits too long to slow down and then speeds up aggressively.

The Toyota behaves more like a human driver, IMO. It rolls on and off the throttle almost imperceptibly.

You should know that it isn't active at low speeds, so it doesn't work in gridlock. But for fairly open interstate cruising, it's great.

I just faced the choice between the 2019 and 2020 and went with the 20. My considerations in favor of the 20 included: Has Apple CarPlay, which is a great system, and I'd heard thatToyota's own system is pretty lame; has a bigger screen for looking at maps etc.; presumably less depreciation; the dealer with the 19 was as sleazy as they come, and it wasn't clear I'd actually save money by getting the 19.

Things I preferred about the 19: Does not have lane departure warning, which I find silly and probably more of a distraction than an actual plus for safety; does not have auto emergency braking, which I don't completely trust; does not have an expensive camera in the windshield and radar in the grill, which would add to repair costs and in principle increase the odds of a repair; I was unsure of the merits of the radar based cruise control.

After getting the 20 I realized that the lane departure is a non issue because you can turn it off and it stays off. I’m still bothered by the idea that a computer can take braking control away from me, especially since the vehicle is connected to the internet. But who knows it might actually save a life one day. The radar cruise control has turned out to be a plus. It works very well (unlike the Subaru I tried it in) and is a big help on the highway.

Yeah,I look forward to using it. I guess I will have to learn the Car-play or what ever it is and get rid of my old CD's :(

My 2020 Limited comes with a CD player. But that's an upgraded stereo system. Not sure about the system in the TRD OR

Oh yeah, a bigger touch screen is good for us old guys. I would imagine the clarity is much better also. I guess I will go with a 2020. I was starting
to panic thinking I wanted a 2019, and I have to sell my Jeep first. It should work out about right, hopefully this fall they will have some 2020's
    on sale.

I should add that one of the other factors that swayed me to the 2020 was the realization that, at least on the Limited trim, both the 19 and the 20 had an OnStar like system where the car can be turned on or off, and doors locked and unlocked, over the Internet. The possibility of that system being hacked or misused in some way is concerning, but there was not much advantage in that regard from getting the 19. If the 19 Limited had no internet connection at all, I probably would have gone with it and done an aftermarket system later to add a bigger screen and Apple CarPlay.

But given the actual choices I had, I'm very happy I went with the 20 instead.

Hey, there's another important consideration! If you can wait for the 21 models you'll get LED headlights. I could hardly believe that Toyota hadn't gone to LED's already, since to me the old H11 halogens are inexcusable on a vehicle this expensive. From the articles I read, the 21 truck is essentially unchanged from 20 other than the addition of the LEDs. So something to think about maybe...

Mine doesn't have a CD player, and it's the Venture, which is kinda like an ORP+. So I'd assume that either of the Off-Roads aren't going to either. I'm actually surprised the Limited has one, but none of the Pros I've seen in reviews have one.

my apologies, I’m an idiot. It was the 2019 Limited I test drove that had a CD player. I remember cause I used it to check out the sound system. But the 2020 Limited that I actually bought does not have one. My bad. Sorry for causing confusion!

Dude, can you give us details on that CD player? Pics? This is the first I've heard of a 2020 4Runner having a CD player. I know some trims of the Camry have the CD player, but that's it.

Agreed, the wiring is different. I found the Mirror tap location for hard wired radar detector is hidden behind rearview mirror trim. Do not try and tap power from the TSS backbox.

I screwed up. Was thinking of the 2019 Limited I test drove before I bought the 2020. I knew the 19 had it because I used a CD to test the sound system. When I got the 20 I didn't even check because all my music is on my phone and the 20 has CarPlay.

I've already thrown myself on my sword in apology elsewhere in this thread. :crapstorm:

Oh, bummer. Thanks for letting me know.

I'm still keeping an eye out if someone's brave enough to try to hack the 4Runner 2020 head unit to accept a CD drive. I wonder what's different between the CD equipped Camry head units and the other ones.

(I tremendously wanted a CD player. I was disappointed that they didn't have any 2019 4Runners because I wanted that CD player so badly. Android Auto is a pretty cool tool to have, but that CD player! Oh well. I'll have to pick up a portable CD player and an FM tuner thing.)

The lane departure warning system is obnoxious and the head unit is garbage for a ton of reasons. If you can get a great deal on a 19, don't let the few "upgrades" on the '20 hold you back.

Super easy to turn off and keep off.

From my perspective, I think it's fine. It's plenty functional, and Android Auto/Apple Carplay masks a lot of issues people may have. HVAC controls remain physical buttons and knobs, too. I've used worse. I far prefer my 2020 4Runner's head unit to my dad's Grand Cherokee. It's not even close. His has its HVAC in the head unit touch screen, and it's downright egregious. There are still some physical controls, but it's not a complete set.

Having tested both the 19 and the 20, I'd say it's the head unit in the 19 that sucks. Tiny and low res screen. Antiquated eTune system. No Apple CarPlay / Android Auto. IMO the 20 unit is also better overall than the ones in my 2019 Subaru, 2016 BMW and 2015 VW. Also my wife's 2019 MINI. So I'm not sure what could be so bad with it.

As previously noted, the lane departure warning system is silly. But you can turn it off with the push of a button and it stays off. You don't need to fiddle with it ever again if you don't want to.

The pluses for the 19, beyond hopefully a lower price, are no automated emergency braking, no radar sensor in the grill to someday need repair or increase the repair cost after an accident, and no camera in the windshield (same reason). Also the aforementioned CD player, for those for whom that's important. Some people might also prefer to have a fully manual cruise control system (you can't turn off the radar feature in the 20), though as others have noted it works really well, with very smooth adjustments in speed, and I've found it to be a big convenience.

Yes, I know lane departure can be turned off. And if you've driven a '20 for long term you'd know why the head unit is garbage. It may be "better" than the previous generations but that does not make it good. Thank god IData has finally come out with the kit to install an aftermarket setup.

I couldn't care less if you or anyone on this thread buys the Maestro setup. Fact is, lots of '20 owners have been waiting all year for it, and it just became available two weeks ago. You don't even know what it is, do you? I've had a vehicle with one and loved it.

Do your own research on the '20 unit, it's not my job to educate you. The list of problems is long and has been well documented on this forum and others. Or don't.

"it's not my job to educate you."

The main point of these forums is to share information. You said something is "garbage." A strong statement. But you didn't say how. You were then asked to give examples to enlighten the rest of us. You respond with "it's not my job to educate you." Seriously, do you have some kind of personality disorder?

PS -- Upon first reading your post, I searched this forum for complaints about the 2020 head unit. Because like most normal people I'm interested in actual information that's useful. I'm sure there's something somewhere that my search missed, but I literally couldn't find one complaint that involved the 2020 head unit. I did find several involving the pre-2020 entune units. If the "list of problems is long and well documented on this forum..." please provide links to help out your fellow 4R owners. I'm not saying there aren't any, I'm sure there must be some somewhere. But your credibility level at this point is approaching zero.
