If you still have the OEM coils put them in and see what happens.

Ive got them. ill give them a try.

Its worth noting its -10 where i live and this is my first winter in the vehicle. Trying to figure out what issues are common to arise when it gets this cold for this long. the root cause is still whatever it was, but wondering if the cold is making the problem even worse

Limp mode should never be common and I hope it's your coils as it's a easy fix. Hopefully just putting the old coils back on fixes it but I'd still do new ngk or denso plugs either way.
    Best of luck!

-10° is tuff on any vehicle, when it's that cold any electric connection can lose contact if it's a tiny bit loose at higher temperatures, makes sure all connections are tight.

You seem convinced it is the engine-have you eliminated tranny & torque converter? Was this "limp" driving in "D"? Did you try S3, S4? Did you try VSC off? Cold gear oil produces lots of drag/friction.

I think i have found a new method for diagnosing, but id love to know if anyone has tried this.
Ill drive around the block, and purposely trip the car into limp mode. Which is causing a rough idle, and not allowing me to accelerate (there is no rough idle when the vehicle is not in limp mode)

I will then go through and unplug each ignition coil individually while the vehicle is running, and I would hope/imagine that one of the cylinders being completely disconnected would stop the rough idle, and i can diagnose which cylinder is the issue, if i check every one and the engine is idling rough regardless, that would tell me that the misfires are not localized to one single cylinder and this would more than likely still be some king of airflow, or fuel system issue. not perfect but wondering if anyone has tried this

That's how we used to do it in the old OBDI days. Unplug a cylinder and see if nothing happens. Have you pressure tested the cooling system? Any white smoke from the exhaust?

I have used that method to find bad coils and on older diesels to find bad injectors. The only problem you might run into is if it's the cold messing up your aftermarket coils you more than likely have more than one that's acting up.

This didn’t work. The engine was misfiring and regardless of which coil i unplugged the rough idle went away

So unplugging any of them made it to from a rough idle to smoothing out but a dead miss?

Did you try driving it with one unplugged? I'd try your old coils packs and see if that fixes it.

Many fakes on eBay, unless they're from a known Toyota dealer.

If you really wish to solve your problem only buy OEM Toyota parts, yes they cost a lot but there is a good well known reason they do as they are quality parts and they work as Designed, any other part is a not a OEM part are a crap shoot some are good many are not good.

I plan to do this. They are indeed expensive. I am assuming ebay ones are fake but was curious if anyone had ever used EBAY ones

If you have your old coils that worked when you took them out I'd put those back in. If you're set on new coils Toyota or denso only and I wouldn't buy off eBay. Another note is get the Toyota plugs. I've tried ngk iridium in one of these engines and it didn't work well.

Why not put the original coils back in to try and see if that solves the problem first?

I’ve had good luck with the following Toyota dealers. Depending on item and time frame, the prices vary some and shipping can also vary.

I recently had to buy 8 bolts that were like $1.80ea. and some of the dealers shipping was around $15-20$ lol. One of them came in at shipping that made the total half of what the other dealers were.

I don’t see a reason to take a chance of fakes now, after what you’ve been through. I wouldn’t roll the dice, but that’s just me. Sounds like time isn’t in your side to wait for a holiday for sales at this point.

You may even call them tomorrow and talk to the parts dept. to explain your situation. Maybe they have a coupon or could help you out?

One the of dealers I had the bolts in the cart, last week sent me an email for a 20% off coupon to get my business, but I had already ordered them. Good luck and I hope you resolve your situation.

Also, good ol' Rock Auto for Denso and NGK stuff -- decent price to quality ratio. Fewer and fewer genuine Toyota parts I buy from my local Toyota parts counter say "Made in Japan" yet still have Made in Japan prices. Worth restating is that these old 1GRs use old-school copper spark plugs. Many have used platinum or iridium and report no problems but sticking with Denso or NGK copper plugs eliminates that variable.

I just used the RockAuto code last week. Google RockAuto discount code, those 'shady' looking coupon websites will pop up but they actually work. Just try any of the 5% off codes until one works.

Unfortunately i don't remember the exact code i used, but i did get it off Googling.
