I have a 2004 4 runner SR5 with 172,000 miles that has been a great vehicle. Starting to incur a lot of costs over the last year but nothing previously. In the last year, I have replaced the water pump, radiator, head gasket seals, alternator, spark plugs, battery. The AC has not worked for years, the roof and hood paint is very worn. Probably need some suspension stuff done. Car windows are a little wonky and rear door looking mechanism needs to be replaced. Also the master cylinder is starting to fail which is primary concern and needs to be replaced in the near future. That being said, the vehicle still runs well. I am not a guy who can take theses repairs on by my self but really love this truck. Is it time for me to sell and move on or put some extra money into repairs?

If you can easily afford it, get yourself a new or newer one. But it will always be cheaper to fix especially considering how much money you have put into her.

If you are not a DIY, repairing cost plus sell price will add up to probably buy a 2007-09. I always say keeping an old car is not for everybody. Sell it for let's say 4,000. You should be able to find a better one in the 7,000-8000 range.

    this.

people always ask why I drive and modify turd German cars, I explain it’s because I already paid the toll of 10s of thousands in tools and experiences of repairs/breaking things/scars/cuts/losses.

like any other hobby, it looks easy when watching someone who does it for a living/did it for their entire life. That’s why I don’t take up enduro riding at 35, it has to be in the blood.
