Hey guys I was wondering if you could help me with this issue.

When I push the brake pedal the steering wheel and the car start shaking.

I thought it's warped brake rotors so I replaced them.
It got a little better but it still shakes when I push the brake pedal.

    What could be causing this?

    It's 1999 4runner with 220k miles on it.
It's rear wheel drive (no 4x4) so there are no cv axles at the front.

    Thank you
    Josef

Three things cause pulsing: 1) brake rotor 2)shocks not providing enough dampening 3)worn bushings

It's possible the wheel hub itself is warped, which can happen if you hit a large bump, curb, or pothole at a lateral angle. You can remove the wheel and spin the hub and see if it spins true. If it is warped, even slightly, it will generate a pulsation when braking.

If worn bushings is there a recommended front end bushing kit for 2001 4runner 4wd? I'm about to do steering rack + sway bar bushings but "while I'm in there"....

Did you replace both the front and rear brakes? Years ago, I chased a similar problem with my '99. Everyone, including me, assumed it was the front brakes. After spending a lot of money on the fronts, I had them change the rear brakes and that solved it.

I recommend buying OEM. They aren't that much and are the best quality.

I'd concede that the rear control arm bushings are not a great design by TOYOTA. They are obviously made to soccer mom specs. They are designed to give a bit to make the ride a bit less severe. After they wear out after 200k miles the backend really gets squirrely over bumps. I replaced mine with OEM but probably a good set of non OEM will work best especially if you off-road.
