I have a 4x4 1999 Runner, 220,000 miles - 1 minor front-end accident a few years ago (not worth fixing- its a practical working vehicle) I rarely use 4x4 but a few months ago there was a whining sound coming from the rear when accelerating - foot off the gas and the sound would stop, accelerate and it would start again. I did some research and took it to my mechanic (who was useless.....said it might be the diff - I knew that but I really couldnt justify the expense). Anyway, driving at about 10 miles an hour yesterday and there was a 'clunk' from the rear and then a horrid grinding noise. I have jacked it up and put it in drive and it appears to be coming from the wheel bearings/hubs - is it worth fixing or do I trade it and move on - Ive got my moneys worth out of it, cheers.

Research all the late '90s 4Runners for sale out there with similar mileage and make your decision.

It's worth it if you were content with owning a 3rd gen. If you don't care one way or the other as long as it works, there are a lot of equally reliable vehicles out there (Camry, Corolla, Avalon) that will be more economical to run than a 4runner. Should be straight forward if it is the wheel bearings.

I hate to say it, but I'd be mindful of the current situation with new cars and car parts that may or may not take affect in 5 days. If the music stops this time, it will affect the prices of both your options (if and how rapidly it happens is anyone's guess).

I do like my 4Runner and the 4x4 has been handy when needed. Its not pretty, the paint is faded but its not a ridiculous size vehicle. Thank you for the comments - if its the bearings, it will be cheaper to replace them rather than buying a new vehicle.
