I've replaced my dome fuse, yet it keeps blowing. I don't know what the problem is or where the wiring issue might be located. I would greatly appreciate any help to save time and money.

You will need to trace down the wiring on that circuit. You will need the wiring diagram... It starts around page 1873 in the following pdf:

    https://docs.google.com/fileview?id...Tk4NjUtYjk1Y2ZiNjMxMTFk&hl=en&invite=COG4vfsI

Looks like it powers the heater blower motor as well as all the headlights and daytime running lights and maybe a few more things. If it is randomly blowing, you will need to pull relays and connections and drive around until the fuse stops blowing or trace down the wiring and inspect it. If it pops immediately, then you should be able to find the short to ground in the circuit with your multi-meter.

It could be a ton of different things... a wire that has rubbed against a bracket or a bad relay or...some kid installed trash accessories with sheet metal screws near the wiring harness.

I have the same problem. For a quick workaround while traveling I removed all the courtesy light switches from the 4 doors. I did not remove the switch for the tailgate. This solved the problem temporarily until I get to warmer weather and can dig into in more detail. At least now the remote door lock controls on the key fob work.

    P.S. I'm working on a 2005, 4th gen 4 Runner. This may not apply to your 3rd gen '99

To possibly save yourself a lot of time check the bulb, sometimes one end of the filament will break off and ground itself, dead short circuit!

Thanks for the tip but I think my problem is not in the bulbs. I removed all 4 door switches and the problem goes away until I open the tailgate. So I'm still on the hunt.

So the fuse pops when you open the rear hatch? You most likely have a few wires broken in the harness where it goes from the body into the top of the hatch. This is a known problem that shows itself in many ways depending on which wires get messed up.
