0W-20 and 5W-30

I use 0w30 Redline and change every 10-12 months which is around 3-5K mileage. Some likely will faint from this heresy.

Its ok though... I am doing my best to keep the oil workers..employed.

 

Maybe you should reread my post. I said to read the manual and choose the appropriate interval for your usage.

In the case of my previous 4Runner, which mostly got highway miles, was stock and rarely towed, I did a 10K interval. On my current 4runner, I do 5K oil changes due to modifications and the way that I use it.

Actually, depending on your usage, you should be changing the oil more often. The manual recommends 5,000 miles, or every 6 months for special operating conditions. I'm basing this off my 2019 manual, but I assume they kept it the same.

This has never been a consideration for me, because I have never driven a vehicle that I put that few of miles on. My current 2019 is coming up on 150k Miles, and it doesn't even get used for work.

 

3-5k has my vote as well. I constantly see engine failures from seized lifters or timing chain tensioners. Carbon buildup on rings is another one I see a lot. People treat the 10k oil change interval as gospel... It's intended obsolescence in disguise.

3-5k changes with an oil that has a decent detergent will keep the engine clean. That alone means so much for the life of the engine.




And yes run thicker oil if your use case calls for it. Even the manual states to do so.

Edit: @Thatbassguy makes a good point on the time interval. If your rig doesn't get much mileage 6 months is a good rule of thumb.

 

I have two of these trucks. I put the most mileage on the 21 Limited and use Mobil 1 0w20. For the pig 16 I use the Redline. My mileage is really low on the pig. I think the manuals are the same from what ive seen on the 21 vs the 16. In the past ive run 5w30 and 10w30 in the summer. If you throw CAFE out the window it becomes more subjective, also even more so depending upon brand of oil you use.

The 21 ironically with more mileage overall is harder on the oil than the 16. My wife use to have a job that was about 2 miles from the house, a nightmare for oil. Now her job is about 8 miles away, still not ideal for burning off impurities.

 

It sounds like both of these vehicles should be getting the oil changed at least every 6 months.

I agree with the first part of this, in that many people should be doing 5K intervals. As the manual states, there are many reasons to shorten the interval to 5K, or even less, depending on how much you drive and your driving style.

Mine actually sits a fair amount, as my work vehicle is pretty nice. But, I travel a lot, so I still manage to put probably 15-20 k on it every year. Between the 4Runner and my work truck, I have been averaging between 40 and 50K for the last five or six years.

The most ludicrous thing I've heard him say was the full mark on the dipstick was actually overfull. And that filling it to the full mark could harm the engine... That was enough to get me off the nut's nuts

 

Toyota switched to 0w20 in 2010 with a couple exceptions. The 2009 4Runner 1GR-FE did call for 5w30, but I believe it was VVT-i and
not Dual VVT-i as the

Oil pumps are not programmed, nor care about the viscosity of the oil (Within reason).

luckily for me guys, canada recommends 10k kilometer intervals for new and 5k for used, which makes no sense because USA recommends the same interval in miles…

Where is this stated? The Canadian warranty booklet doesn't include maintenance intervals. Last I checked you'd have to enter some usage information on the Toyota Canada website and it spits out a customized maintenance schedule. Previously (until 2013?) the interval in the booklet were 8000 km and 16000 km.

 

I'll admit I'm an ass but I didn't think this is considered me being one.
