I believe Facebook and dont care what one of the largest makers of the best cars in the word’s engineers recommend. I am so much smarter, heck I even seen it on You Tube. I will aks the local dealer to reprogram my variable oil pump to compensate for what I know is better for my motor.

Currently at 167k miles. I’ve been running Valvoline 0W-20 synthetic for the 2+ years we’ve owned this vehicle.

Too many people on the planet happily tossing solid advice or knowledge because they “did their own research” by watching some random yahoo speaking authoritatively online.

Look, there’s plenty of things to be screwed by like the lack of difference in store-bought stock and broth.

But beware when something that leans too far into clickbait crosses your feed. They gain by being sensational (whether by right or wrong), not by being the most correct.

Just a comment. During my career in automotive engineering I was surrounded by lots of experts with lots of different skills and experience. When it's time to learn about something or make a decision you get all the input you can from every available source (internal experts, external experts, computer analysis, test results, technical papers that have been through peer reviews, ...). You get confidence when all sources tell you the same thing. So for me when someone posts a YouTube video and says "this is what I do" I wonder why anyone would put their faith in just one person.

^The challenge as a consumer is to separate the experts from influencers who pretend to be experts. Not all the opinions are equal.

The 1GR has been around since 05 (dual VVT since 2010) with development started in like 2000 so a different set of engineers and maybe even a different CEO. One engine has bearing issues and it isn’t about oil viscosity. Could have been a new process that just didn’t work out in the real world. Everyone will still buy Toyota though and aliens still won’t talk to us due to oil viscosity debates. No warp drive for us.

Then we will want to put K&N filters on the pattern buffers for more power but you materialize looking like someone that hung around with diddy…all covered in oil.

The Nut is a very experienced Toyota mechanic with a lot of front-line knowledge, but he isn't an engineer, never seen design data or test data. He doesn't understand engineering principles behind certain designs. For example, he says not to pre-fill the oil filter because the fresh oil from the jug hasn't been filtered yet  which is completely false.

    Stock so far…..except better tires.
The Owners' manual is very clear. The mention of using a higher viscosity for severe conditions is part of the section discussing the second number (i.e. the 20). So you folks towing trailers in a Texas summer at 85 mph should consider 0W-30.
Meanwhile, it's minus 25 Chocula (-13 Frankenberry) in northern BC as I type, so the "0W" is a given for early morning starts.

Isn't that the guy that has a bunch of people convinced that 10,000 mile oil change intervals will ruin your engine?

I'll pass on his advice as well.

OK bud. Let us know how your engineered-suggested 10,000 mile oil change intervals go as well.

this. toyotas own document, Warranty & Maintenance Guide on page 38 (T-MMS-214Runner.pdf) calls out towing, heavy vehicle loading, extensive idling/low speed driving (i.e. sitting in city traffic, school pickup lines, and drive-throughs all day), consistent short trips under 5 miles, and even using a car-top carrier as all considered grounds for "severe conditions" and that includes a LOT of what most would consider normal use. that cuts the normal oil change interval in half and is easily grounds for running a higher viscosity as per the owners manual. i have no idea why most people are so eager to ignore this.

Clearly, a 7,500-mile OCI is the best of both worlds. You get the protection of a 5,000-mile OCI, but the cost savings of a 10,000-mile OCI.

Actually, you get neither. But, it might be the perfect interval for anyone who is on the fence between the two.

The drain choice should be 5-6K for normal driving and 3K for severe. 10K is for freebies from the stealership.

I disagree. Read the manual and choose the appropriate interval for your usage. If you want to waste your time and money on 3K oil changes, that is your own choice.

Agreed! 3k oil changes on the 4runner is absolutely absurd. I did 10k oil changes till 175k miles and the engine did not explode, burn or seep any oil.

Ok you disagree. If you want to change at 10K than have at it. When you look at how little it requires to go from normal driving to severe service levels I guess its up to you how often you want to change it. Stuff like idling, towing and dust sure reduce it quickly. Alot of this 10k stuff is based on free oil services at dealerships and also the intent of the manufacture to ensure you truck doesnt go hundreds of thousands of miles so they can sell you a new one. Another factor worth noting is distance travelled from each start up, shorter trips, frequent on offs with motor and your acid levels in your oil start to increase, add to that low mileage over a year and some may change simply due to time.

Again I am not trying to get you to change at 10k as you seem happy with it. Ill keep to my 3-5k levels or once a year intervals which I prefer. I case of Redline oil is cheap insurance in the long-term.
