I just bought a 05 with 144k miles, it’s smooth so far but from what I have been reading the 05 has a bad rep on head gaskets blowing, I understand it’s all a gamble but if there is something that I can do to my 4Runner that can prevent maybe from that happening? and having to spend a good chunk of change.
    Thanks

Nothing can be done to "maintain" the gasket.

Keep a regular eye on the coolant level and engine temp. If the engine overheats, a cracked head can result and an expensive repair then become more expensive.

Keep a regular eye on oil level and color when you change it. Keep the oil at the proper level, and if it looks like chocolate milk or cappuccino latte when changing it, then coolant is getting into the oil.

Thanks for the advise, much appreciated! I just switch from a 01 Tacoma that was my daily driver for 13 years to the 4 runner, after switching I learn about this problem but definitely will be alert keep the good maintenance.
