Joining the Club - CPO or New?

Hey T4R Crew,
I’m in the market for a 4Runner Limited- probably a 2017-2018 CPO. I don’t have a firm budget and a family member has offered to lend me whatever cash I don’t put down. With that in mind:

1. New or CPO? Since 4Runners don’t lose much value when you drive them off the lot, I’m not really getting a big discount by going CPO. Any opinions on whether I should just go new 2020? On the other hand, 2020s will have CarPlay and extra safety features, which are nice but not game changers.
2. Timing the CPO Purchase: I’m not in a huge hurry to get a vehicle (my 2010 Prius is doing fine). Am I better off waiting till the 2020 4Runners come out in order to take advantage of the glut of off-lease 2018s that will be rolling in in October? Can I expect much savings?

Years ago with a wrangler and this year with the 4runner I set out looking for used. Both times I ended up going new because used held the value and for a few grand more I got new. If you can swing it I would go new.

I bought new for the same reason @ForRun did. All the couple year old used ones were about $2K less than new.

 

I would concur that if you are looking for a 2 year old truck, you are better off buying new. Every used one I looked at was within $2000 of a new one and almost all of them were Hertz rental turn ins... fuck that! $2000 is a lot of money but not in the scheme of a new - possibly lifetime purchase - vehicle.

 

When I bought mine, it was a no brainer to buy new, particularly if you’re financing any portion. A decent one a few years old wasn’t priced enough less to make up the difference between new car rates and used ones. (Or at least was so insignificant that I didn’t find it worth considering the cpo)

 

I bought used, 2019 off road package with 3600 miles on it, got it for 35,000. I thought that was a good deal.

Original owner leased it, for 2 weeks, then traded it in for a Chevy pick up, didn’t like the ride I guess??

I bought early June and some, not all dealers were going 3800 to 4000 under MSRP. Haven't been looking but imagine can do better with the 20s right around the corner

 

Given how Yota's hold their value I'd say new however if you are planning on swapping out suspension, adding plate bumpers etc, buying a used one without TSS would be the way to go......at least that's what I'm thinking for myself.

 

Ya right now my Toyota dealer wants 39,800 for the same thing I have.
