I purchased a brand new 2019 TRD ORP last week. I am planning to move from the midwest to Arizona within the next 10-14 days. I have plans to tow a UHaul 4x8 or their 5x8 trailer around 1700 miles. Reading through the owners manual Saturday it stated I needed to break the 4Runner in for 500 miles before I towed anything.

I needed a 1000 miles if I wanted to go faster than 45 mph when towing.

I am assuming since it's in the owner's manual I should follow those instructions. I'll cross over the 500 mile mark today and plan on reaching that 1,000 mile marker by the time I head west with small trailer in tow.

Have any of you found that break-in period for those amounts of miles were not needed?

Not really! Just get the kilomile mark and tow away. I think when towing for a reasonable distance, your oil needs to be changed a bit early. 5k instead of 10k if I recall.

An update to my towing experience with a brand new 2019 Toyota 4Runner. The UHaul 5x8 trailer was light since I was not carrying any furniture. It made the 1700 mile trip without any issues as far as towing. I am glad I played it safe and followed the owners manual to get the 1,000 miles on the odometer before towing above 45 mph, peace of mind. The 4Runner didn't even know the trailer was back there.

Not sure anybody would really know whether it was needed or not but always a good thing to follow what they give for directions. Personally I generally do except for maintenance intervals and that I average on time or earlier.
