Hey everyone, I am a long time lurker on this forum and finally created an account after picking up my first every 4Runner (2019 5th Gen TRD off road Premium). I am in absolute heaven and the truck drives like a dream. I originally bought one because I am an avid snowboarder who chases storms in the winter and loves car camping at the base of mountains. I am not really an off road kind of guy and I never owned a truck before so I have no experience with AT tires.

Since I have the 4Runner now I would love to take it on the beach and do overnight camping with my girlfriend and maybe do some light trails around the NJ/NY area. I am not looking to rock crawl with this truck or do anything intense like that. For the most part this is my daily driver and its mostly highway driving for me.

I am looking for a good set of all terrain tires that are good on MPG, arent too loud on the highway, and can handle sand. I have been in trucks with crazy AT tires and the noise can be horrendous. I am also not looking to have the most aggressive/badass looking tires in the world either. I would say I am way more of a function over looks kind of guy. I have done a bunch of research on tire rack but I wanted to maybe engage in some conversations with people who have real experience with these tires. If I was to buy a set off of my reviews I think I would go with the General Grabber A/T 2. Seems to get amazing reviews and seems to be quiet on the road.

    welcome!

lotsa people seem to be happy with the grabbers. the other model that has been getting a lot of great reviews are the cooper discoverer a/t. you will get a ton of different opinions as people use them for different needs. I have the BF Goodrich KO2's and they have been great for me, but they are probably a bit more aggressive than you may be looking for. im in philly, so we get rain, snow, ice and i like to surf fish so sand was a consideration. also make sure whatever tire you are getting has the triple peak snow rating on it as well.

check out trail4runner.com for some reviews as well.

    where are you from?

Thank you for that advice. I am from Central NJ and surf fish myself. I never planned on taking it to the beach but why THE HELL NOT !?!?! lol. I love camping and this would be a cool way to get my girlfriend to sleep outside for a night.

I am sure people have all different opinions on tires but I just want to see what might be some other options that I am not seeing online. I know people really gravitate towards the more aggressive looking tires but I just want something that is going to work and not effect my MPG drastically. Thank you for giving me that link to check out reviews.

Just curious AT tires can also be used in snow and be effective?? Ive been chasing storms for years and have always relied on Blizzack snow tires which plowed through snow and I never slipped. Would this be the same for AT tires with a snow rating?? something new I need to research. thanks for broadening my eyes on different things to consider!!

Ha yeah why the hell not! i took mine out in march on the beach for the first time. it was a lot of fun. i plan to take it to LBI a ton over the fall striper/blue, etc. run.

as far as MPG's goes, are you sticking with stock size (265/70/17)? if you go one or two sizes up, it adds weight/can decrease MPG. i think a lower profile/less aggressive a/t wouldn't be too much of a hit. what tires do you have on now?

tbh, i can't confirm totally...i got my KO2's november of 2018 and it didnt snow much last winter, so i barely drove through snow. i think the triple peak rating is designed to come as close to a true snow/winter tire as possible so you dont have to swap them out in the winter. there should be some info on tire rack or tire buyer regarding the rating/symbol.

you're welcome! this is a great and friendly place for advice.

This place seems friendly so far. Another 4Runner group I posted the same question and all the know it alls roasted me and made me feel stupid lol. I am a sports car guy who finally was able to afford an SUV now.

I cant wait to take it out on the beach and do some overnight fishing/camping. Be careful with LBI, I dont know if you heard the new but they just tested the water again and it has high levels of fecal matter in it. If you ever come to the north jersey beaches send me a PM. Would love to link up with another 4Runner and do some surf fishing. My brother and I love striper. still havent caught a blue yet and that is a huge goal on my list.

I am going to do some further research into the snow aspect of AT tires in the winter. Cheers !!

Edit: to answer you question. I am not planning on changing the original wheels at this time. I would keep the stock rims on it which are 265/70/17

    Welcome!

I've used snow rated all-terrains on my last few trucks. The snow traction has been more than sufficient for most winter driving

I think the Yokohama Geolander ATS has been the best of what I've owned in snow. They were also good all around tires, but got noisy over time. To be fair, I never rotated them, and I'm sure that's why they got noisy.

If you're driving up to the mountains in the snow, you might want to have dedicated snow tires. As good as snow-rated AT's are, they're nowhere near a dedicated snow tire.

If you go that route, I highly recommend Nokian Hakkapeliittas. I have some on a Scion TC, and I'm almost more confident in that in snow than the 4runner with KO2's.

@Thatbassguy Yeah I am absolutely going to have dedicated snow tires for what I do. I go to some remote placed and cant take the chance of getting stuck. I am actually going to look at Hakkas for this truck. A lot of my snowboard buddies in the PNW run those winter tires.

i caught 3 blues in one day off the surf a couple weeks back!

ill keep an eye on the bacteria levels, i saw some reports of those this week. gross! thanks for the heads up.

A little late to this thread but I have to agree 100% on those Nokians. I put them on my wife's Rav4 and she drove circles around everyone when the roads were snowy. The Rav is gone and now I'm looking at Michelin LTX AT2s for our (her) 4Runner or maybe General Grabber. She wants an aggressive look and I want a tire to handle everything and last many miles. I have the LTX on my tacoma and love them. Great in all weather and great in the woods on the occasion I get there.

Welcome VaJ, you might want to check out GT Radials specialized snow tread. They ride quite and smooth......They even have “studded”!!!
