My 2003 4runner had a misfire when I baught it. Drove a tank of gas thru it, then, the misfire got worse. Was told it was just a coil pack. I replaced it with a new one and no fix. I swapped them with other coils and it still showed bad. Since the tach dont work, I figured the crank(maybe knock cant remember) the one that controls the tach. I replaced that and a cam sensor, new one was 1.5k ohms, the old one was 1.3k ohms, within spec. I believe the tach still dont work and still misfire. Where to go from here other than paying top dollar mechanic? Only thing I can think is computer or wire issue. Seen some had rats in the inside that commonly chew wires. Appears my engine was replaced at some point since it has taco marked on the side of the motor.

How is your coolant level? Fluctuations? Sounds similar to a head gasket problem I had on my 05

Oh yeah it's the 4.0 from what it says on the hood. I found where it says Tacoma written on the front of the motor. I have owned this over a year and only got a tank of gas out of it. So I have not driven much, but it was a little low on fluid, and it seems to yoyo When hitting throttle. Sounds like I may be in need for a new motor for this....again. not like any toyota i have owned. Thanks for the reply. What did you end up doing, and how did u figure it out?

Drive the highway for about 20 miles. When you park do you hear bubbles in the coolant overflow jug? Does it overflow? Leave sitting all night to cool down and bore scope the cylinder. Is there moisture in the cylinder? Many small signs add up to tell the tail.

I have experienced similar issues and just had a coolant problem. it seems to be burning oil now. I had cylinder misfires, replaced the spark plugs and coils and that worked for awhile. unplugged and re plugged the battery and things worked for awhile. Maybe the coolant reader is messed up?

A bad fuel injector will give you a misfire code as well. I had one on cylinder 3 on my 2001 Tacoma and cylinder 6 on my daughter's 1999 Tacoma, replaced the injector and the problem went away
