Hey everyone. As the title states, we have been a GM family our entire lives. I'm almost embarrassed to say that. My dad has a machine shop and we do mainly driveline work. My dad has been doing it for 50 years yes that is correct and I've been around it my entire life but for the last 5 years on driveline stuff. I mainly do drawings and fabricate things and do repairs.
The closest vehicle I have had that is a Toyota is my wife's 2009 Pontiac Vibe/Matrix. It has 177,000 miles on it and goes to the transmission shop tomorrow to help us diagnose an issue.
My wife and I had the pleasure in 2016 to drive a 2016 Toyota Forerunner on a business trip. Long story. It was great. I was like a kid in a candy store driving this thing. I never took it off road or anything like that but I knew immediately I loved this vehicle. Fast forward a bit. We are going to be moving into a newer house about 30 mins from where we currently are. I am getting rid of my 2000 GMC 2500 extended cab 4 x 4. It has 244,000 on it.
I want to pick up a 4-Runner. I have about 10-12k to spend. I have started looking at a few. What I'm looking for is what to stay away from, what to gravitate towards, is high mileage a real concern, should I look at the V6 or the V8, etc? Or anything else that might be helpful. Did certain years have rust issues or brake issues? I think you get my drift.
In all the years in the shop, we can count on probably both hands the number of issues anyone has had with a Toyota anything. It's usually lengthening driveshafts for the "kids" jacking up the old Toyota trucks. I appreciate any and all information. I'm a member of many of the forums. I find them helpful and educational when I'm outside my area of expertise. Thank you in advance!
