Hi everyone, I just recently purchased my first 4R and I couldn’t be happier!

So I was recently told by the guy who’s going to tint my windows that the motor for the back window might mess up if I get it tinted. I’ve never had a problem with window tint before, but seeing as how I’m new I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this problem. Is it something I should consider or can I not worry about it? Any information would be great!!

I think you need a new tint man. My back window has been tinted for years and it works just fine.

I’m no tint guy or mechanic.... however... seems unlikely...

Toyota makes their window sweeps with very little, if any, tolerance. When the tint is applied, that thickens the glass going thru the tight sweep, which can cause the motor to fail eventually.

Well, I mean... leave it close then otherwise why would one use tint?

Wouldn't the same be true of the side windows then?

At some point one just has to stop over thinking things...

I’ve had my rear window get hung up by a sticker that had a slight edge coming loose so the tint thing isn’t too far outside the realm of possibilities.

If a "tint guy" said that personally I'd put some weight into it. He may be speaking from experience. Just pull the thread and ask more questions. I mean is it a 1% chance or more like 75% from his estimations? From there you need to make your own decision. Anyone that gave me "fair warning" about something I was thinking of doing I probably wouldn't but that's just me.

All I can tell you is my husband was a mechanic for Toyota back in the mid 90's and he saw these come in for failed window motors due to the tint stressing the motor too much. I'd love to tint my windows darker too, but am not willing to risk burning out my 28 yr old window motors.

Mine are tinted and no issues. The reality is, how often do you roll down the back window anyway? Maybe if you do it everyday it might be an issue, but for the occasional use, you should be fine.

I don’t know if the tint will affect the rear window motor...but I would listen to the tint guy. And I only say listen to him because every sticker I put on my rear window gets ripped off in about 6 to 8 months of window use. I have to imagine that is due to the tight tolerances.

Your tint guy needs to use a better window tint supplier

The tint goes on the inside so it's not going to get ripped off by the blade. Sounds like your tint guy is looking out for his own liability which I understand. If 1.5 mil of thickness burned out a motor that's a shit motor to begin with. If anything just have him leave a little space at the top where the tint doesn't go up inside if you're that worried about it.
