    Hello ,
What is the pros and cons of a 5 speed transmission vs a 6, and a 8 speed ? Is it worth buying the 5 speed 4runner , or wait for 6 or a 8 ...thanx

You could be waiting until 2021 or even as late as 2023 for this change if it even comes at all. No one knows when the Gen 6 4 will come out, if there is even going to be a Gen 6 4runner, or what it will offer if/when it does come out. Hell it could be a CVT. :annoyed:

So should I just get the 2020 , which will most likely have the Toyota safety sense , and not the 6speed tranny ??

You will have to make that decision on your own but yes the 2020 will have the safety "non"sense and yes it will be the same drivetrain that has been around for a long time. But because of that it is proven and in it's current design the 4 is the most reliable vehicle in the USA. So it is what it is and you know what you are going to get. Is it the latest and greatest? Not even close but again, it's proven and sometimes the latest is not the greatest. I'm kind of old school so I bought a 5th gen. Love it.

    https://thenewswheel.com/this-is-why-cars-are-getting-more-gears/

So more gears really has to do with efficiency to meet the overall fleet requirements manufacturers face. It also allows the use of smaller engines. Will be interesting to see what the next gen is going to bring but I will be happy driving my 5th gen 4 for another 15 years. Or I will trade it for a new 2022 Superduty with the 7.3 Godzilla motor and 10 speed transmission..haven't decided yet. :D

The 8 speed Aisin box in the VW Touareg is a great unit. More gears is OK in my book. Better fuel economy and smoother up- and downshifts under all throttle conditions.

As a die hard diesel enthusiast for over 19 years & a proud owner for 15 yrs. I own both a 12v Ram & 6.0 Powerstroke.
I beg of all to not give a gas 7.3l Ford motor be a replacement for a diesel.
Sure the hp may be the same or higher. The torque of the diesel is the answer. That is what allows me to push massive amounts of snow, or someone else to pull a trailer or put a mini cooper in the bed.
Empty it may sound (in theory) & drive great. The second you want to use it as a pickup it just makes noise & sucks gas.
I have plowed with a brand new (at the time 2017 Ram 2500 6.4l) it was gutless.
I can use my big toe to push snow due to the torque curve. This thing required half or more throttle to keep moving my small test amounts (he had just got his first plow, so I plowed & showed him some tips).
    Sorry for the rant.
Just mad Ford didn't bring back a 7.3l diesel!
Plus the new Fords are aluminum! LMAO Whole other topic...

Yeah the torque of the new ones are fun and impressive but simply a luxury I can't afford. Between the entry price and the cost of maintenance and fuel I won't be getting a diesel. That new gas motor is an old school pushrod motor and could well be the last vehicle I will ever buy(prob not since I have a sickness). The truck is overbuilt in every way, will likely have close to 500 ft lbs of torque or more, and would last me decades with how I would use it. Plenty of power for my use. I never buy a vehicle for gas mileage cuz I like truck/body on frame style vehicles. An I hear you on the 7.3 diesel, I had two of them...great motor.
