Lift Gate Struts That Fit For Less Than $25!

I searched and searched all the part numbers for BOXI Lift Struts to find ones that match the closest to OEM length. (I've had strong arm before and found them to be crap) So I ended up with the ones for 2005-2006 Chevrolet Suburban. (SG230068) They are basically the correct length when extended and closed. The only caveat is that they are of the ball end variety, and not the forked ends. No big deal... just got two sets of Sachs Stabilus Lift Support Ball Studs for less than $4 per pack, from O'Reilly Auto Parts. (SG900001)

I had nylon spacers to insert into the larger hole of the top mounting flange, but I decided on something that won't wear out and rattle... I found thin jamb nuts that threaded onto the ball studs, and rounded off the hex corners with a drill and grinder so they fit tight into the flange hole. Then I proceeded to add loctite to everything, DONE! All for less than $20!

By screwing in the ball stud at the top first with my jamb nut method, it does make the installation a tiny bit harder instead of using nylon spacers, because you have to pull down the strut by hand 1/2" to pop into the ball. I had a second pair of hands on hand, so there's that...

They are more than strong enough to lift the tailgate by themselves, and hold the gate high enough that I don't hit my head anymore. (I'm 6' and like to wear hats)

What is the cost of new ones that are of original fitment?

 

I believe the last time I checked they were $236 a piece.
