Just picked up an SR5 platinum. I've been a Chevy guy forever and while considering a new vehicle for the past year I was looking at Tahoe's, Yukon and sierras. My 06 Tahoe treated me very well but wow, this truck is nice. Extremely happy with my decision.

Ok I gotta be that guy. Don’t get me wrong I’m buying a 5th gen end this year but for gosh sakes, why does everyone call them trucks. They are SUVs and the best of the breed.

Because they are a frame on chassis vehicle. Similar only to a truck.
They are a dying breed. There's only a few manufacturers that still make such a vehicle.
People will invest over half the purchase price to make it theirs.
The options & capabilities of the T4R are more truck like than a vehicle (crossover). Also they have 4x the capabilities of the SUV's I drove in the '90's.
It feels like a tank. Not an SUV.
Buy one now & enjoy it!

It is a truck, just not a pickup. It's got a body on frame construction, a solid rear axle, and suspension meant for loading/hauling/towing.

Similarly, the Honda Ridgeline is a pickup, but not a truck. It's a unibody, built on a minivan platform, 4 wheel independent suspension, built low for better road handling.

That has to do with weight not what the vehicle is. Even midsize and half ton pickups do not meet that criteria.

I think you're talking about commercial vehicle plates. Those are required on any vehicle with an open bed that could be used for "commercial purposes".

These also are required to have them. They are pickups, but they are not trucks.

Ok, let me rephrase please, I'm not looking to diminish 4runner. I will own one, just waiting for the 20s to hit the streets and see if I can score on a 19. I'm not here to be "rule" 4runner is not a truck, just old school taught me (I'm older than the hills) that trucks have beds, SUV has utility purpose and a hatch. I owned 2 runners since 2000 and love them! I learned through this post to research and I did learn that 4runner body on frame can classify it as a truck. Case closed, just do not understand what difference does it makes. I'm not going to be less of a man if someone calls my runner an suv, as that's what Toyota markets it as and that's what my ole school bought me it is. The plates? Does any state allow truck plates on a runner? I can only speak for Illinois and No its not allowed. My Ford 1/2 ton has "B" plate, here in Il, commercial trucks require "D" plates or higher depending on size weight whatever.
And good gosh, I think those 2 pictured get B plates as the manuafure calls then a truck..um no, looks more like the runt of some litter that some CO's wife thought was cute so they had to keep it. Jeep gladiator? lol, if it was still jeep I would call it a truck but its Fiat and they have diminished and ruined most everything they touch, please someone crush fiat and save that heritage!
Here is Toyotas complete line up of SUVs and squashed SUVs

Stream of consciousness aside, you asked why people call them trucks. Our answer is... Because they are trucks.
