    Hey All,

I am a current driver of a 2010 Tacoma, I love it, its been very reliable and has about 180k miles on it now. I cant say the same for my wife's current car which is a 2014 Kia Sorento. Long story short, I've been a long time fan of 4 runners since the 90's. To me they are one of the few SUV's left on the market that are a true utility vehicle and not some pansy grocery getter that has a cheap AWD system that breaks down under normal us and can barley make it over a speed bump without breaking. Now that I got that rant out of the way. I am looking for advice. We are strongly considering trading the Kia for a 5th gen 4 runner (open to older if in great shape). We test drove a 2010 base model the other day and my wife liked it, this particular one was not in great shape but I wanted her to get a feel for how it rides. We have several in the area. I am not overly concerned about reliability even with over 100k miles. However I did want to know if there are any model or years that should be avoided? Or if their are any particular issues that I should be aware of while I search? I consider myself a "car guy" and I do most of my own work so I am not totally oblivious to the obvious things. Just wanted to get a more intimate opinion from current and past owners.

On a side note should I avoid the limited with the all time 4x4 system? I like things simple and that wont break down. My last 2 SUV's lost their AWD due to all weak crap they build them with failing..

    Any help would be appreciated,

    Thanks!

I had a 4th gen with full time awd. No problems after 257K. I'm guessing the newer ones are just as good.

I'm not aware of any bad years. Good luck with your purchase

I don’t think there are any years to avoid. 4Runners have been rock solid forever.

Is frame rust an issue? I live in the northeast so I know its a known issue with the Tacoma's. I never heard the same widespread issues effecting the 4 runners. obviously I will be checking for excessive rust regardless but anyone have issues with these rotting out?

    Thanks all for your replies..

Yes definitely check the frame if you are in the salt belt.
