I have been asking myself that question. I own an 18 basic premium, no mods, don't expect to, I do no off roading. So why do i like it? It doesn't have the current driver safety aids, I wish it did. It is not the best riding suv on the market. It doesn't have the best safety records. So, what is it about it that appeals to me? The only logical reason I can come up with is that it gets me up off the road, I don't worry about it performing, it seems to be bulletproof, as long you service it, it goes. (I owned an 04 and 07) My son has the 04 with 210k and he still loves it. I would like your comments.

That sounds like the “Car and Driver” review of a 4Runner.

You'd be better off in a highlander or rav4. They are better grocery getters.

I love mine because it can be a daily driver and my 4 wheel drive vehicle for offroad.

Glad you like it and IMO "safety" aids suck. You have one of the last of the great 4Runners. :quickdraw: Keep it as long as you can.

I have owned 3 4runners as well. I didn't really off-road in either of the first two, but always liked knowing that I could get through almost anything if I needed to.

You're correct that it doesn't do a lot of things as well as some of the unibody SUV's on the market. It's not made for the masses. I call mine a luxury off-road tank.

Maybe it's the overall feel of lasting quality. Or the fact that it's built like a brick shit-house.

Of course, I've only had mine for 2 months, so some of my opinion is based on my previous 4runners. I'm hoping this one lives up to my expectations.

So far I couldn't be happier:)

No big deal. I have found theu reasons people own these vehicles is as diverse as the wind. I think the composite shows the uniqueness of the truck. I do find sometimes in the forum, some folks think they are only a worthy vehicle if you like it for and use it for the purposes they do. I've been surprised at times by the snobbery.

IMO , if you like it, and it does what you need it to do, that's all that matters. Enjoy it!

Based on your stated usage, I might have opted for a Highlander. My wife's is more comfortable, has more power, gets better mileage, and has a ton of safety features and other options that the 4 Runner doesn't while still maintaining the same reliability. On the other hand, the Highlander is a little "girly" in my opinion while the 4 runner has a more masculine stance. That might be all the reason you need.

Since I got mine to replace a Jeep Rubicon, most other SUV's were not an option. I use it off road quite a bit and in my area the Highlander or other similar SUV's just wouldn't cut it.

yeah, I didn't want two highlanders. I gave up camry hybrid and 20 mpg to get the t4r, but.... i just like it. there are a lot of vehicles in the market that I consider, good ones, but the runner is the last of the breed. I dont think the market has had so many decent and reliable ones than now. A lot of them have a terrible 1-2 deprec and some really good deals out there if one is interested. the KIA sorento (highlander compatible) is a example. However, I did reapproach dealer about swapping my new one and getting same vehicle plus 4wd. 2 months old 2500 miles... he offered me 5K less than I paid.

Well I'll be the first to admit that if I made a list of everything I needed or wanted in a vehicle, there are probably ten that would beat out the 4Runner. But I wouldn't love a damn one of them more than I do mine. Not everything has to make sense.

I think the only other thing I might possibly ditch my 4Runner for is a fully loaded Ford Raptor super cab. Anybody know how I can make a quick $95k? That should cover sales and property tax.

Not a fan of the new Raptors (liked the 6.4l). Just loved the comment.
There maybe 10 things I would change in the current T4R!

PR48 - I'm with you I bought a 2018 SR5 Premium back in September. Since then it sits in the garage and I've been taking it out every weekend and pretty much "enjoying" it. I kept my '09 V6 Accord figuring I'd "drive it into the ground" however that may be awhile. I really "like" the 4R a lot I don't "love" it, it's not my favorite vehicle I've ever owned. I'm not rich but I'm ok with what it cost so letting it sit around right now 70% of the week is fine with me. To me the 4R is a good mix of new and reliable but also isn't like driving a spaceship it actually still has some knobs you need to manually turn. Although I can't get used to not having an automatic setting on my lights I'm always leaving the damn things on, of course they turn themselves off...haha... Good luck with your purchase.

Funny I come across this thread today. Just this weekend I was thinking, "Man I love this thing." as I was running errands.

But I have a hammer that I have used for the past 50 years and I am pretty fond of it too. So.....

I've got my grand dad's hammer. I'm 41 but I'm pretty damn sure that thing is well older than me considering it was my grand dad's hammer and everything. Also he owned a hardware store so it's probably not that sentimental. At the very most he used it, and the very least he saw a rendered drawing in his 1960's wholesale catalog.

Wow, I got my Grandad’s hammer too. He was a coal miner in WVa. If you got a lard sandwich for lunch you were living large:).It has the leather wrapped handle? Still use it sometimes although I shouldn’t. Just like holding it feels good in your hand...CBD4F57E-4E0E-4865-BCA4-E28FA3D1EFA3.jpg kind of like gripping that real leather steering wheel...

Yep, mine looks similar, with the one piece metal head and handle. I remember using mine (my dad’s at the time) to “customize” my Hot Wheels with my dad’s vice when I was about five.

Anyway, the 4 Runner has the same feel to me. Like it will be going strong for decades and passed down to the next generation.

exactly. I have a hammer which belonged to my father in law. a great hammer, can't put my finger on it. I think it belonged to his father, so has to be at least 100.

Haha! My mom likes to tell the story that she thought I would grow up to work in autobody or insurance adjusting because I used to "modify" my Hot Wheels in the same way.

better question is, How could you not like your 4runner?! They're awesome machines! The only thing I'd give up mine for is a Land Cruiser......but that won't ever happen....
