I'm trying to set up a bug out load plan. I know, right? Crazy prepper. I find myself stationed on the gulf coast with hurricane (not the beverage) season approaching and remember some news stories of fuel being hard to come by when our overlords declare a mandatory evac. being in the military i have no doubt we will be the last to leave (so much paperwork and asses to cover). Any way I digress. What do you carry and how. I'm thinking 10 gallons in four 2.5gal cans on a roof rack, just not sure the best way to secure them and what to go with that will 100% not leak... Until I open it. Don't much care about the nanny state, just want what works. i want to make sure I have enough fuel to get out and away from the herd with extra for being rerouted. Oh, inside will be filled up with my two boys. 180 pounds of DDR German shepherd between them and maybe the significant other... Maybe.

I haven’t finished my personal set up yet but rotopax have proven reliability. I have mine ready to mount and even though I haven’t used them, just in hand they are top quality. Mounting plates are available to use with almost any set up. Shop around, with their many distributors you are are bound to find a good deal.

Keep in mind if you mount them on the rack they will need to be accessed daily in order to vent them. Potentially more due to the heat on the gulf coast.

Just looking to transport not store long term. The idea is, top off and fill cans when the storm tracks local and then load them up when it's time to go. Looking at the military plastic cans, but not sure I can find a fuel can under 5gals. Water cans yes, but have not seen them in 2.5 for fuel. If they worked in the mid east they will work here. Just have to find them... For sale.

Even rotopax has it on their website that their cans need to be vented daily as do most cans. Unless you are filling them every morning and emptying them every night they will need to be vented. I mean unless you are planning to fill them the day of a hurricane but then you’ve defeated your whole purpose.

Hey man, I was stationed down that way as well, went through three evacs from hurricanes. The traffic was horrible, but we had plenty of warning before the storm to get filled up and what not. The senior commander was prompt in issuing the order as well. I never felt like I needed to have a bunch of spare fuel with me. As long my taco was topped off I knew I could make it north a good ways to where there would be less to no issues. Not saying not to be prepared, just wanted to share my experience

Good to know. Thanks. I just want options, in the event things are more complicated.

How much does it hold? Those would be easy to store.

I use the steel NATO cans. I order the "non-fuel" version from Atlantic British so they don't have the idiotic carb compliant fuel nozzle and cost less. I use a safety siphon to transfer. They do seem to have a 2.6 gallon can here: (https://www.roverparts.com/Parts/GJC10). I've kept them in the back of my Tacoma (RIP) with a bed cover for several days with no need to vent, no problem.

As far as hurricane evacuation, I live in Galveston TX and got to go though Harvey. We didn't evacuate or flood, but lost power for 5 days. The fuel issue wasn't the vehicle range for evacuation, it was dealing with the fact that no one had gas for a couple weeks after the storm because it couldn't get here. So have a spare can or two for evacuation in case you get stuck in something like the Rita cluster duck, but some cheap plastic scepter-like cans to keep at home are invaluable. Fill 'em up at the beginning of hurricane season, and rotate through transfiling and refilling the cans so they don't sit for too long. The nasty storms we get in Texas pop up in the middle of the gulf, with usually only a couple days warning. Already having fuel is one less thing to have to worry about when you already have too much to do in too little time.

And "crazy prepper" is the right mentality for hurricane season. Just don't build a bunker. :)

Got them today. Tiny spots of rust and smell like they got cleaned out with mineral spirits or such. Definitely does not smell like JP8. Not bad for 30 bucks a pop. Will start using them this weekend.

The cans work really well. I put some "non- combustible" liquid in them using a newer plastic nanny state container. I was amazed that the older cans held a funnel, like all by itself as if by magic. I then used them to pour the "non-combustible" liquid into a smaller vessel without spilling... I take that back, the smaller vessel quickly overflowed do to the rapid rate of pour. That being said, there's no leaking from the cap or fill spout, no dripping liquid running down the front of the can and no leaking even when I placed the can on its closed lid. I then proceeded to do lawn maintenance. Very happy with the purchase. Not sure if I will repaint them or just leave them as is.

Update. Finally needed to fill up the two cans. Strapped them in the back of the TuRD before work around 0430, filled them up ( hold a bit more the 5 gallons) and they sat in the back all day. No spilled liquid and no smell. No getting high off the fumes...oh well. Very happy with these. For the price, and functionality.

No issue with venting daily. They hold pressure with no weeping.

I just picked up two 3 gallon rotopax that were blemished for 50 bucks each off their website. The extra100 miles that gets me is enough for what I do and where i go.
