I'm on my 2nd 4Runner. First one was an 1996 Limited green monster. Loved it! Sorry I sold it. Got a pre-owned '04. Love it but Frame is already rusted out for no good reason other than Toyota cheaped out and didn't coat it. They could have at least told us so we could get it coated! Tomorrow I get it inspected to see if the welds will go through the winter and check the rear axle. I read the rear axle is a major problem with rust. Toyota will not cover because they do not have enough complaints. But they do have a recall for the Tundra and Tacoma!!!!

I have an 04 in NY. It's only been in NY, NJ and CT. Nowhere near the salt except the salt on the road. And it gets washed. It depends on the year. My 96 had no frame issues and handled the same way. But my 96 went to FLA once and still no rust on the frame. I think 4th gen are having problems. I was told by mechanics they are all rusting out. They have seen many frame rusted 4 Runners. They are the ones who told me about the recall. But they didn't know it was only for the other trucks.

i know that if not taken care of the 4th gen frames are very susceptible to rotting

FurlsFlyin - who is your mechanic in the Metro NYC area? Mine definitely needs work - looking to switch from my current mechanic.

    Thanks.
