200,000 Mile 4Runner. What suspension components should I replace?

Hello all! Purchased my first 4Runner over the summer. Think I got a good deal (2004 V8 w/ 200,000 miles for $6000). I had the Timing belt/ water pump, etc replaced shortly after purchase. Now looking into suspension. Obviously with this many miles the ride kinda sucks. I plan on doing struts, shocks, and springs in the spring (Looking at Bilstein 5100's). What else should I consider replacing while I have it apart (Control arm bushings, sway bar bushings,.... etc)? This will be my daily driver and won't see much off road (I have the FJ Cruiser for that )

 

Welcome! I would check upper/lower ball joints, inner/outer tie rods, sway bar end links, sway bar bushings, control arm bushings, all rear suspension bushings, and grease the driveline. Don’t just replace it all inspect and replace what needs replacing.

 

Thanks for the info! I'll post more pics of condition of components in the spring when I have it apart. Unfortunately no garage and its cold in CT right now!!

 

Stabilizer bar links make a big difference.

I have 205,000 miles and haven't replaced ball joints or control arm bushings. They don't appear to need replaced IMO.

 

Any recommendations on shocks and struts? What about coils? Honestly the extent of my off roading will be class 5-6 roads. I would like to put some 31" BF Goodrich A/T tko's on it also. Thanks!

 

Springs only if you need them, if you are referring to replacing due to high mileage. My 4Runner is a highway cruiser so hasn’t needed springs.

 

Agree with hobo advice here. I have 2005 4 runner with 150,000 and mechanic asked for the items mentioned by hobo, and I replaced them and they were cheap at Amazon.

Ride in a 15 year old 4 runner can't expected to be like new 2019 4 runner (even with new struts).

Price you paid ($6000) is ok. You can get to 400,000, but let the dealer do your tranny fluid change.

I had the tranny fluid changed at 100,000 miles by the dealer (only). Special Toyota ATF.

How's the tranny on yours?
