if I was going to pull out a vehicle stuck in snow (in the ditch, for example)... where is the best place to hook up to the 4runner?

As a general rule, the best place to hook up a tow strap to your vehicle is the rear tow hitch as it was designed to pull stuff. Also you do not want to hook up from the front and then reverse to pull someone out. Gears are designed to have the most strength going forward, no in reverse.

And if you stress or certainly bend anything, STOP!! It's an SUV not a Bull Dozer.

Either the rear receiver hitch where I have a shackle to hook a tow strap, or from the winch depending on the circumstances.

Auto to 5 speed conversion...2nd gen. 16.5" steel wheel to 15" wheel conversion
Length by adding or shortening can help or hurt u..depending on the scenario..
Longer strap coming up over the Crest of the ditch is a fulcrum point creating less work..
Short and close is more control only if ya trust the one in stranded vehicle not to hit u
