Picked up an 86 4runner yesterday without the factory roll bar. I have access to a tube bender and am a certified welder. I have an idea of what I want and what purposes it will serve. I am basically looking for something to replicate and wanted to see what others are running on their first gens. Plans are it will mainly be a fun summer family rig and prolly serve as hunting rig in the fall as my Excursion doesn't like the narrow Pacific Northwest trails. Forgive me if I posted this in the wrong section, I'm new to the forum and still trying to navigate it .
    Thanks,
    Ben

Cool find! That drivers side door could not be more 80's if it were wearing shoulder pads.

Seriously that drivers door is the best! Should paint the truck to match it.

Hahaha it is pretty rad .There is an automotive paint supply store where I live and supposedly these doors are off a 4runner that the owner of that shop owned. How they got on this one I don't know but I'm digging them. Matching the rest is a serious possibility! I like those cages. Thanks for the posts. I essentially want safety first for my kids the ability to have a small roof basket and then also some sort of overhead fishing rod storage which could work with both those designs. I have a friend with a CNC bender who makes cages/after market a arms for side by sides. I'm goin to have to out him to work!

BestGen how does yours do with the 4.88s? I have a set of IFS gears out my pickup that I believe are 4.56s. I also got a straight axle when I got this 4runner. I have a straight axle project goin on right now so I may SAS this one when I'm done with my other one. Or I may just swap the IFS thirds in that I have and call it good.

It kicks ass with the 4.88s! I can use overdrive again. Before climbing the mountains, I'd have to constantly downshift to second when I had the stock 4.10s. Now I can pull 4th. I found some factory 4.88s out of 93 4Runner in the wrecking yard. Look for code G144 on the tag. It was an ADD axle. IMG_0239.jpgBut I swapped my original long side axle onto it and eliminated the ADD(auto disconnect drive?). IMG_0254.jpg
Need to add a seal to keep things in place!

Right on! Thanks for the info. I just can't decide if I wanna use the thirds I have now or SAS it and spend the money on 5.29s. I know I'd be happier with 5.29s but for what I want it for the 4.56s I have would prolly be fine. I may even drop down to a 31" tire and help regain some power. I also have a header a cold air intake that I haven't installed yet. Not expecting any huge difference but every little bit helps! I'll have to check the tag on the ones I have. They're out of a 92 pickup I for some reason remember them being 4.56s

IMG_20190225_125215716_HDR.jpg Woke up to a foot of snow today. Not usual for where I live. Normally would be a fun day but I work at an airport so I've been plowing snow since midnight!
