Curious if this is normal or not. 2004 v8 4runner for reference.

I will preface this by saying that the A/C works fine, blows cold, etc.

When the A/C is on, I feel like it puts an 'over the top' amount of load on the engine where like sitting in Drive, but stopped, i have to use more brake pedal effort to keep the car from lurching forward. It also seems to shift differently than when the A/C is not on. By that I mean it seems the shift points have changed to higher rpm or 'not as smooth' shifting than when the A/C system is not running. I understand that running the A/C in any vehicle will add load to the engine to spin/engage the compressor, but mine just seems like 'more' if that makes sense.

Just curious if this is a sign of the compressor clutches going bad, or if this is completely normal. As far as i know its the original compressor with 268k miles on it.

The engine does rev higher when the AC is on, not sure if yours is revving too much or not, but usually it's about 100 to 150 more RPMs.

The engine load i'm less concerned about (where i have to press the brake pedal harder at a stop just to keep it still), its the shifting harder or like off what i would consider normal shift points when the A/C on that baffles me. Maybe its normal - i've had the car for a few years now and i don't 'recall' it being like this but maybe it has and i just haven't been paying attention until now.
