Hi, I want to get this question/myth out there and is pretty common:

I know TONS of 4runner owners run 285/70R17 tires on TRD PRO wheels 17x7" and SR5 alloy 17x7" wheels. HOWEVER, 285/70R17 tires calls for rim width range of 7.5-9" so technically minimum of 7.5" of rim width is required. I know trail edition and TRD Offroad wheel is 17x7.5" so it is safe. BUT is it safe to run 285/70R17 on SR5 or TRD PRO wheels????

These are the wheels i have TRD Pro and they are 7.5, i am running 285/70/17 Falken Wildpeak M/T with 44 psi front, and 38 psi rear. I just went out and took a measurement to be sure they are 7.5

so how were you able to measured the rim width w/o removing the tires??? Anyway they are listed as 17x7" not 17x7.5"

Also will I need to do body mount cut on my 5th gen SR5 if I run 285/70R17 tires?? Did you had to? I have a 3" front strut spacer lift

yeah i measured from out to out, and got about 8.5, then i took off a 1/2" for each bead. But anyway, yes i did the bmc. I do not have a spacer, but am at 2.5 in the front.

so you had to do a BMC to avoid rubbing from the 32.9 Wildpeak MT tires even though you already have a lift? Oh wow I guess I'll go w/ 275/70R17 to prevent it.

Yes the wheels are safe with 285s.

No you don't need any mods to run 285s with a 2"+ lift except possibly the fender liner mod and removal of front flaps.

how do you know that for sure? I heard some people had to do BMC to prevent rubbing. Even w/ lift. For example:

I had a shop do my install, Kings, built right UCAs. They trimmed the front, removed the mud flaps, and showed me they needed to do the bmc, i agreed. No need for anyone to be all pissy, my undertanding is not all the rigs are exactly the same. I trust this shop, and have had plenty of work done by them, they do this kind of work every day. I also have heard others that needed to get the bmc with my same conditions, and mods. Just sayin.

I was told the same thing by the shop that lifted my 4runner. They said I may or may not need a BMC if I run 285/70R17 tires. SlvrSlug did you try and see if they will rub first before you agree w/ the BMC? As I would imagine the shop was trying to earn more of your money by saying you need a BMC.
MeefZah SlvrSlug is correct, not all setup are 100% the same. You didn't had to doesn't mean other won't need to...

Yes, they showed me the wheel travel, and it would rub slightly. That is why i went with the bmc, they only charged like $100.00 for doing it, so they are not getting rich off that.

$100 is still money. I mean if I were you would've trying to see if they would rub first. And if did, THEN go back to the shop to do the BMC

I have 285/70/17's and get slight rubbing at full lock reverse......haven't took it to my shop for the follow up visit...... falken wildpeak with a toytech boss lift......like what was said, every truck is different and will result in different scenarios based on the many factors involved.....

I don't know that I would trust the experience of a guy who can't even measure - or Google - wheel specs.

Of the 9 million 4R owners with 2.5/1.5 lifts and 285s you two may be the only ones who have needed a BMC.

You know i searched the other 4-runner site, and there are several other people that have had to do the bmc. As far as the wheel info. I retracted that and owned it, which is more than some folks do. I do not not a lot about these runners, but i still try to help, and contribute if i can without being a dick.

From a 1/2” wheel width concern .. migrating into BMC s**t talking...
I’d like to know from the Pro wheel and 285 running guys, how they look and handle? And any airing down issues at speed on Long trails (ie extra friction heat perhaps from the narrower rim versus 8 or 8.5?)
I also like that look (it’s sexy) and am steering that way...
    Rims fairly light I understand?

I think based on what I read. If you’re using 275/70R17 and also according to the guy that owns TOR. He installed this tire on a stock 4R without rubbing issue. If you decide to go on this route. I think or maybe there’s not that big difference between 285 and 275. I maybe wrong and let the experts give you that suggestions.

I just put 285/70/17 Falken AT3's on my 2019 TRD Off Road and there is zero rubbing no matter how you are turning or back up and no cutting had to be done. The guys at the shop said it's 50/50, half of the 4runners that come in need and half dont. A little worried about how it will handle off-road given that I just did a spacer leveling kit for now, so will probably do proper suspension lift soon. In the meantime it drives great minus a slight loss in power and of course worse gas mileage.

Cool. I had to do a little fender liner mod and remove my mud flap to stop the rubbing. But do Body Mount Chop was needed.
So how many inch front and rear spacer lift do you have on your TRD OFFROAD?

It’s the 2.5” rugged off road spacer. The actual spacer is 1.25” and gives effective lift of 2.5”. And no rear lift yet but I’ll be adding that to correct the negative rake.

Curious if you’ve upgraded the suspension yet?

If so, what did you end up with? Thanks!
