I've tried plenty of different grease guns, and was never happy with any of them. I always had problems with leakage on the shelf, and even bigger problems when re-loading them. Until I splurged and bought one of these:

    IMG_8809.jpg

It's a Lube Shuttle (see https://lube-shuttle.us/) Instead of pushing a replacement cartridge into the tube then pushing the plunger through the grease and priming, these replacement cartridges screw into the tube. No messy reloads. I added a Lock N Lube (https://locknlube.com/) coupling and this thing is clean, and efficient. I work on my own tractor, chipper, ATV, and 4Runner. My tractor has a driveshaft zerk that is impossible to get the coupling on, so I bought a right angle coupling and then for an even more difficult location a grease needle:

I still prefer a manual pump over one of the nice battery pumps. These aren't cheap, but I have more invested in a small pile of leaking cheaper ones on my shelf.

We use a regular manual gun like the shown above, while we do have a battery operated one, I prefer the manual one for the 4runner because these zerks require only a few pumps to maintain, the electric one is used on the farm equip. There are several models and makes to choose from, if you like youtube, check: projectfarm for the 'lowdown' on grease guns... he has vids on everything, he probably has vids on grease guns too.

Do you buy the grease from them? Or do you buy empty cartridges and fill them yourself? If you do use theirs, which lube do you use for the 4Runner unjoints?

I use the G200 EP for everything. I buy them OEM when they have sales. But, my 4Runner only has about 800 miles on it, so I haven't lubed anything on it yet.

What is the lube schedule on the 4r and is there a "map" of all the different nipples or lubrication points?

Greasing is not rocket science, nor does it have to be done often enough to justify anything more than a manual with a flexible nozzle. Sorry, JMO.

Bump. Is there an online reference of where the points are that need greasing? Thanks.

Three on each driveshaft 1,2 and A for 4x4's at least ,six total...and "A" I believe is supposed to take a different grease.
I've been using Superlube brand grease for them all on my 3rd gen(250k miles) and my old 2010 5th gen I owned for 6 years and have NOT had the famous driveshaft clunk from sticky grease these can get.

    I have'nt greased the 22 yet.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. Better than starting a new one I guess. I’m in the market for a grease gun and I have some general questions.
    • Lever action vs. pistol grip. Is one better than the other? I imagine it’s very convenient to be able to operate the pistol grip one handed, but does it require enormous hands or lots of grip strength?
    • Standard grease cartridges vs. the spin-on style. The spin-on ones seem more convenient and tidy, but the cartridges seem less ubiquitous. Will a spin-on grease gun limit the choice of grease? Any other issues with the spin-on?
    • Full size vs. mini grease gun. The mini one seems easier to handle. The grease cartridges are 3 oz. I think. How many times can I grease the propellor shafts before I have to reload? IE how many ounces of grease are required per use?
I will be using a Lock n Load tip.
I am not considering anything pneumatic or battery powered.

Lever works well if you have space. Underneath a vehicle can be tight. My grease gun has two modes depending on how you set the pivot point. High pressure or high volume. I forgot which setting is easier on the hands.

I suggest full size because there are more cartridge options.

If your hands are losing strength then I suggest electric. It would be way more convenient.

They’re not losing strength – yet. But this may be the last vehicle I own.

Pistol grip, full size, grease cartridges. There are lots of choices for grease with the cartridges.

can anyone recommend a slim/low profile attachment to grease the spider joints? I have a lock n lube grease gun (gets another vote from me), but the tip is too wide to fit in the u-joint to get to the zirk.

I haven’t had any issues using the L&L coupler. Are you having issues with the rear joint of the front prop shaft?

Both! I must be doing something wrong. Do you align the prop shaft in any particular orientation?

I can get it at an angle but hard to describe so I would need to take a pic. I think I go past the joint with the hose from the driver side then loop back to hit it with the zerk facing slightly to the driver side. Luckily it's free spinning in 2wd so you can just angle it.

You would be well advised to NOT USE ANY MOLY BASED GREASE ON THE U-JOINTS, only on the slip joint which requires only 3-4 pumps otherwise you will hydro-lock the slip shaft, reference point "A" in diagram above. Moly on the needle bearings in the u-joints is too slippery for the needles & they will not rotate in their cages as designed. They will stay stationery & just wear in a locked position instead of rolling in the cages as intended.

This has been a well documented and researched topic in the Automotive & 4x4 world. As you know you are free to do what ever you wish. Unfortunately I learned this too late on my Tacoma & seen it with my own eyes.

Hey, OP, be careful not to overfill either driveshaft once you start greasing.
