My take on things. As I did with my Tacoma, I plan to just do tires and roof rack, rest remains stock with the exception of some cosmetic things here and there.

 

Eh, it was a repetitive and generalized take from Illinois. He makes it seem like there is NO way to do a 2" lift and retain reliability. When he says most people can go where they want without any modifications he is right about people in the midwest. It would have been nice if he showed us some examples of what he sees as far as inferior mods or what to avoid.

 

Keep in mind the Car Care Nut knows nothing about off roading.

I'm on stock height suspension and I cleared a 10lb propane tank laying on the road without touching any of the five skid plates. Maybe AMD is on to something

 

He is just so anti-mod. He hates aftermarket parts and changes. He is an SME in Stock Vehicles and that's fine, but he has no interest in other applications or knowledge for that matter. If he had a business in Baja CA, or in AZ, or UT, I bet his take would be different. In any event, he makes decent points, I guess....

 

With a 2" lift, the boaty-mcfloaty ride and the nose dive went away. The stock suspension would not have gotten me to that place in my avatar.

 

My thought as an amateur / non technical user.

 

But they look so much better when they are set up a little different from stock.

 

Didn’t watch but TCCN’s mentioned not being keen on mods and I get it. I’m sure there’s plenty of things that can be done for “free” in terms of wear but I’m betting he’s also seen way too many poor taste, way out-of-spec things. (heck, the Carolina Squat was banned legally in the Carolinas plus other states since being a bad idea didn’t stop it from being enough of a problem.)

Plenty of folks probably need to hear it too, there’s always someone asking about “best mods” or lifts but not a mention of what they’re trying to do other than spend money.

 

Lol. I know we don't have anything like MOAB, but there's plenty in Wisconsin that'll fuck you up if you're stock.

F' up everyone's day after getting stuck with all season tires and make 4runner a joke on social media pages, may be on local news..

 

In the video he says it's logical to get a second set of dedicated wheel/tires for offroading and swap the all season back on when commuting. I thought it was a reasonable take, considering how many people on this very forum have had issues balancing their AT tires and still get vibrations and steering issues.

 

Ok, this got me thinking... So far outside of electronics mods, the only mod I've done has been my Gobi Roof Rack. I had planned on doing tires and lift next year. Maybe I'll start with tires first and be content for a bit.

 

Few things,
- swapping them at home for a small size guy like me is not easy.
- spending for 4 or 5 tires, wheels, tpms. (me personally not comfortable having non matching spare). May also have challenges getting TPMS synced after wheels swap? Seems too much / unnecessary work.
- Those who don't have much space to store is challenging. Atleast my garage don't have that kind of space.
- If you have dedicated offroad tires and only use when you go offroad I might me wasting money when you throw them away after like 5 years when time is up but only having few miles.
- Even if you do a road trip and use all season tires and let say visited a national park like Arches National park and see 4WD only trail and regret not having offroad tires at home?

On my comment on youtube I forgot to tell about electrical mods. I would never be comfortable driving with stock halogen H11s. I felt so unsafe early days driving at night returning home after a trip where the road is known for animals. even driving slow I had a close close on a trail with an Elk where the trail is brown, Elk is brown, halogens color temp is yellow. Even with my new 4runner with factory LED highbeams in my books useless. To me aftermarket "offroad" lights wre a must to be used on road when there is no vehicles around.

 

There is a lot to address and I don't want to look like I'm trying to be argumentative. All I will say is offroading/overlanding is a lifestyle hobby and each person has his/her own limit on where the line between utility and capability sits.

I don't think he touched on lighting here. He is was speaking primarily about the driveline in this video.

 

Follow TCCN maintenance videos as near gospel. His reasoning is usually spot on........although........how much does he have tied up in his 600,000 mile Lexus LS?? Yeah, Truth must be told... even he's familiar with unjustifiable amounts of cash thrown at vehicles because of an itch others couldn't possibly defend with a straight face.

He's not wrong in the video. I'll do me and live with consequences.

 

I had to stop watching. This same type of guy told me metal music is from the devil. My ORP had severe nose dive and highway float. My lift got rid of that. I had it done professionally and have no issues. I also do not plan on taking my daily driver off jumps. That being said, it's what I would recommend. Trusted shop, no Evel Knievel stuff. Enjoy your ride!

 

I have a set of MT's that I usually run from June until sometime in the fall. I have considered the option of just swapping them out for trips, but I generally just leave them on during the warmer months.

I'm not exactly Hercules over here and I manage. But, it's obviously personal preference if you want to run an aggressive Tire all the time.

Just do like I do and ignore the TPMS light when you have your play tires on.

 

It will set off the warning anyway once one airs down for the trails.

My Bilstein front/rear set up should come right from the factory. No cutting or BMC, no spacers, kept the OEM UCAs and all mudflaps in place. Its my daily driver with Falken WP AT3 in 285/70/17s on stock rims. Runs smooth on the hwy at any speeds, even 80+. Finding a place that knows how to balance tires is the key. Last time my tires were balance and car aligned was in July 2022, its still perfect.

 

Armchair quarterbacking. It takes AMD with no off-road experience to advocate separate set of tires for wheeling trips. Guys in my off-road club have tried this; they all went back to AT tires full-time and sold the street tires. During 4-wheeling season you could be hitting the trails every weekend. The wheel swaps became a chore even with a two-post lift, and you end up missing out on trips.

 

100% with TCCN for regular/road vehicle. If you commute 99%, it is insane to modify for 1% of your use case whatever it is - racing, offroading, towing, etc. If you do it anyways, it will make it worse at the main task. Yes, you can spend big to minimize compromises, but at that point you might as well buy a dedicated vehicle.

I don't understand why people spend thousands on getting perfectly good truck to drive like shit on highways. Just buy a beater Jeep and turn it into offroad monster for that money. How many people WITH lifted 4Runners actually ever took it anywhere that would NEED that lift?

 

He is just running out of content to put out there and instead of being closer to the Off-road community, he just put himself in a corner with his views. But don't forget , he had a couple of videos on offroad vehicles he has serviced before, and he praised the owners and even the vehicles themselves. He had a white 4R that was lifted and had been all over the country, and overlander from his state, he had no issues with it. He featured a red tacoma that was lifted and was doing the Sahara dessert and he was proud to say that you needed to have modified vehicles to be able to cross difficult terrain, but now, he has a different story. A missed opportunity for his business really, in fact, the offroaders/overlanders are customers that spend more money on vehicles than the regular stock customers. Anyway, I still have respect for the guy and his channel but put me off with this one really.
