I'm so back and forth on this. I think I'm going to put it together and give it a test drive. I can't image that the caliper will center to the rotor, but I am sure the pistons will even out the pads on the rotor. I just don't like that the inner pistons will need to come out more than the outer. I've heard calipers sticking was an issue with these 4runners so maybe this is why? Thanks again for all the comments. I'll let you know how it drives after I get the brake lines going into the calipers replaced (OEM) BTW.

I’ve looked at your pics numerous times, trying to recall what mine look like. I don’t feel like it looks off. But a feeling wasn’t good enough so I conducted some highly scientific research. Laying a clear ruler across my phone, there was 55mm between the outermost caliper edges and the center of the rotor looked pretty damn close to 27.5mm.

Also, I wonder if there’s an optical illusion at work b/c the top of the caliper is asymmetrical.

All that said, being brakes, you’re the only one who can decide if they’re good.

Oh, and you might bend the tip of that clip up a little to be sure there’s no contact with the rotor.

Thanks Bluesky. One picture shows the caliper gap from the rotor looking from the front towards the back of the car. That's about a playing card no more than a credit car thickness from the rotor. The other is over top the rotor looking down at the back side, that seems to be about a 1.5 to 2mm gap. Maybe it's designed that way for a reason, but it doesn't make sense to me. Also, I think the spring clip goes at the bottom not the top like I have it in the photo - or does it matter ??

The pistons don't retract all the way when you let off the brakes. (If they did, it would feel like you had no brakes on the next application.)

The little anti-rattle clip can be on top or on the bottom. Factory installation is on the bottom. Some folks install two clips on each caliper to reduce the likelihood of the pads getting cockeyed.

Here's my follow-up after putting everything back together. After driving around the block a few times with easy braking, then followed by some longer more aggressive braking, the brakes are performing well without overheating or rubbing. Had an alignment done and all is good. My conclusion is that the calipers didn't lineup with the rotors before I started the job and for some reason was engineered that way.The front suspension and brakes are done and now I'm on to dealing with rusted frame issues. For another post.
