This may be a silly question, but I've read many folks complaining about the smell of Fluid Film, and I'm considering using the stuff. Has anyone used both Fluid Film and other lanolin products, like Lanox? I've used Lanox MX4 a number of times and I honestly love the smell, because it makes me think I'm touring an old battleship. If that's the smell people complain about, I'm all good with it. If it's something else pungent, I may consider other options.

I use Rust Check which is similar to FF but doesn't smell.

Fluid Film does stink and any time it gets warm over the next month or so you will smell it. Its not a great smell, not an old battleship smell, its like a sour refined soybean oil smell.

Red or green? Red Rust Check has had a cherry flavour for a long time.

I’ve used FF the last 10 years and smell usually goes away after couple of days.

I love the smell of Fluid Film in the morning... (Seriously, unlike many I honestly do like the smell!)

According to my nose, Fluid Film smell goes away in a few days and does not come back even in hot weather.

I've used the green can. The actual gelatinous fluid is white.

My CS advised me not do the offered undercoating. [Informally]
Says when the metal heats up, its not pleasant.

Had mine done in June this year, there is NO scent a 2 months later. The heat kept it dripping a few weeks, which I kinda like. Wicking and creeping into the tight spots is good.

Subsequent applications shouldn’t be a thick as the original, I will probably have it redone in the fall of 2026.

Fluid film smells like wet sheep. That’s the short answer. The long answer is that it smells like wet sheep in a barnyard with other wet sheep, and maybe a couple of dry sheep in the mix.

The smell goes away quickly, couple of days. But if you spray it in your garage without covering the floor, your garage will smell like a barnyard for a couple of weeks.

Wool wax seems to be more highly refined lanolin, so it smells different (less “organic”).

I prefer to look at the end result.. will gladly put up with the slight odor of the rust prevention product, whatever it may be instead of dealing with rust.
