My best guess is a receiver for a remote start? I bought it used, so I don’t know what is original or not. It’s located just in front of the battery.

    thanks!

Does it have after market lights? That's definitely not factory wiring. Your 4runner comes with remote start and that's not part of it.

It doesn’t have any extra lighting that I’ve seen. Maybe it did, but they were removed prior to sale?

Follow the wiring to see where it goes, my 23 Pro doesn't have anything like that.

Your best bet would be to look for numbers and run them online because no one but the previous owner knows what the previous owner added.

Limited's and Pro's have built in trackers. My wife tracks me on the app occasionally.

Is that feature part of the connected service subscription? If that’s the case it’s probably using the GPS signal that is generated by the car, which doesn’t use additional external hardware.

I’ve seen more than a few pics of tracker units installed by dealers onto their vehicles before sale. Not sure what they use them for, maybe tracking their inventory, or if the dealer does their own financing, to help with repossession? Maybe dealers are supposed to take them off before delivery to the new owner, but it’s obvious some get through.

Check to see if there is anything installed in-line with the OBD-2 port inside the cabin. Remote starts, and trackers both tend to use the OBD ports.

That's a dealer-installed tracker. Usually the device costs less than the mechanic labor to remove it before sale, so the dealer leaves ut there.

I’ll track down the wiring when I get home.

I suspect that @morfdq is correct. The dealership tried to charge me for some anti theft tracker thing that they installed that I refused to pay for. They probably just left it. Now I have to figure out if it will disable the car if I disconnect it.

If it only has a lead to positive cable and another to the negative, it's a GPS tracker. I just removed my Spireon tracker the other day. I think my insurance company was using it to track my mileage. They said I did 29K last year, which is probably correct.

It is a part of the connected service. I pay the $80 a year so I can start it, unlock it, make appointments, make sure it's locked, make sure the windows are closed and whatever else I can't remember at the moment.
