I am a new 4Runner owner I am two days into this,
I "accidentally" purchased a 2025 TRD Offroad Premium (non hybrid) in Underground (sort of a dark gray, non metallic).

My 2019 Jeep Wrangler JLU had to go. I had endured perpetual manual transmission recalls. An abusive relationship with both the dealership and Stellantis. I had it dialed in, it ran great as a daily driver. Took it to the Arctic Ocean from Seattle, twice. Great vehicle. The occasional interaction with the dealership or Jeep, an absolute mess. I noticed oxidation on the paint last week. This a known issue with JLU's. It is due to bad factory paint prep. The Jeep had to go.

I had decided on the GX500 or the Ineos Granadier for replacements. Had test drive appointments set up for Sunday. I ended up with a couple of hours to kill on Saturday afternoon. My friends with 4Runners absolutely love them. Zero issues, well maintained or not.. so, decided to swing by the dealership to take a test drive with the "in line 4 turbo that I know is going to (not be good)".. I was VERY disappointed. Yeah, not a 911 turbo, but was actually quite usable. Two hours later, I made a deal and drove home in the 4Runner. I am convinced this is the best deal going for the money.

I am super interested in learning how y'all will maintain these. My first thoughts, do an oil change at 1K miles, and then halve the documented intervals... I just don't see how an in line 4 turbo can deal with 10K oil changes, if you want to go beyond 100K miles.

I look forward to interacting with y'all.

    Neat, welcome.

Oil and filter change interval is a whole can of worms so pretty much just do what makes you feel better.

The 10k interval has been recommended by Toyota pretty widely and the 2.4T (although there are differences between transverse and longitudinal applications) has been around for a bit and likely won't be blowing up left-and-right at 100k miles. You can send in a sample too for analysis, but otherwise just don't be this guy and you'll probably be fine. (Of course I do 5k oil, 10k filter personally but that's just me and I don't have a turbo)

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your new ride

If you traded your Jeep because of the poor paint quality and bad dealer interactions I have bad news for you.

I will definitely be going the sample route. Will do a change at 1K, then sample after 3K, 4K, etc. My experience has been the "best' synthetics seem to be fine at 4K, and need replacement by 5K. I did notice that Toyota recommended 5K changes in the 2022 NX 350, where this engine first appeared. I am aware that the manufacturers are encouraged by the EPA to extend oil lifetimes. I was seeing numbers as high as 12-15K / 1 year changes in vehicles I was looking at when shopping around. May be fine if you only keep a car for 5 years, or < 100K miles. I keep them for a while.

Problems, I expect those. It is how the manufacturer handles them that makes the difference. Stellantis lost in court over their bad paint prep. They extended the warranty to 5 years on the paint. My problem showed up at 6 years. i was given the middle finger by Stellantis. Took a few burned down Jeeps and a few years for them to recall their bad clutches as well. Not a company I want to do business with any more.

^Dealers behave the same way across the industry. With a Toyota you typically interact with them less often... As I understand the Jeep dealers are a bit more tolerant if your Jeep has gone off road. Not so with Toyota dealers, because "off-roading is inherently dangerous".

You didn't buy the white color, so your paint shouldn't be any worse than usual.

IMG_5614.jpg IMG_0380.jpg Congrats on the New Rig! & Welcome from SoCal… previous 2012 Jeep JK owner. fortunate that I Never had a major issue .. only the oil filter tube leak & clock spring, the dealer found it was still under warranty and took care of that for free.. I don’t do any rock, crawling, or even extreme, difficult, four-wheel-drive, terrain.. that being said with the clearance I had in the Jeep. I definitely was going to more places than I do in my 4runner, but I usually do solo trips and I’m older now I’m very very happy with the 4runner especially on road and I sleep in the back I hope you enjoy it and build it the way you want there’s so many options you can do so much to it and with it

I definitely agree about shortening the OCI to 5K.

Another welcome from Wisconsin! There are lots of people on the forum that don't believe in 10K oil changes, I'm 1 of them. Completely understand your concern about a turbo 4cyl. needing a little more attention to the oil.
