Well, you know. Any time you can include “blood and treasure” into a post, it’s going to have that effect.

So sad that as wisdom increases over time, energy decreases.

This was my unicorn. A gray market 1991 Mercedes 300GE Geländewagen short wheelbase cabriolet. Straight six, 5-speed manual. Solid axles. Full time 4WD. Three locking diffs from the factory. Remote axle and tranny breathers from the factory. I moved heaven and earth to import it from Germany. Rare even in Europe - I can’t remember the exact numbers but I think it was something like fewer than 300 were made.

I lifted it. This involved researching and buying individual components. There were no kits available. This meant having each corner weighed separately and then poring over spring rate charts to make sure the vehicle would have the right amount of lift and would sit level.

I also imported a winch bumper from Germany.

Then MBUSA changed their policy. They would neither repair nor sell parts for any vehicle whose VIN was not in their database. And my VIN was not in the database. In those days Mercedes cars came with a booklet that showed every place in the world that Mercedes cars could be serviced. My local dealer was in the booklet that came with my G-Wagen. My energetic pointing to the dealer’s name in the booklet did not impress the service manager. Not being able to get parts for this off road vehicle, especially considering how I’d been using it at the time, was a no-go. Ultimately I sold it.

And then I got a Defender. Out of the frying pan and into the fire.

It’s so rare that I actually laugh out loud while reading. But that did it.

On a fairly regular basis, the Caps wisdom flows through a wordscape that just makes you let go and be taken along for the ride.

Sometimes you even end up where you weren’t expecting to go. It’s like a good movie….

They get even better on the second reading with a nice a cup of coffee.

This particular post here, in response to my theorizing regarding my broken transfer case, is one of my all time favorites…https://www.4runners.com/threads/th...ve-the-transfer-case.33456/page-3#post-483959

edit: to leave no doubt, it was at the end of this post, after realizing the truth bomb he dropped, that I noticed my hands were actually balled up.

Yeah, I can prattle on, can’t I? I will confess that sometimes my angst bubbles to the surface occasionally, couched in unnecessarily florid prose. and on that occasion you were merely an unfortunate victim. I don’t really think you suck at off-road driving.

:DI knew the last part was in jest, but after going through the emotions leading up to the conclusion, I was just too invested. It would have hurt me more to believe toyota failed me!:p:laugh:

In any case, you have a way with words…it’s a gift:toast:

It'll make sense when you mess with it, if you end up needing to. Fender liner has a screw holding it to bottom of bumper cover Un front of tire. You can remove screw, push plastic liner forward, then punch screw through to hold in place now further away from front of tire. If more space still needed, can use heat gun to soften the plastic fender liner wherever it hits tire and use something (not your hand) to slightly push/reshape the plastic for clearance. Be careful about what is behind the liner before heating much and don't melt through either. For example, I think the windshield washer reservoir is on passenger side and can be an issue for people using huge tires. May or may not affect your situation.
