Alright, let's be honest; who here is considering a 6th gen?

that whole thread is pretty much what I expected. LOL. With the price increase 6th gen saw, I'm glad he got something out of it.

Recent drive from San Diego north to Lomita. Close to San Pedro and RPV off of PCH.
I had a choice of driving my wife's Tesla Model 3 or the 4Runner.
I chose the 4Runner, much more fun to drive!

A payment like that is why people are broke. But then again if people refused to buy it for that price at some point they would have to bring the price down.

We clearly haven't reached the pain threshold yet. Considering now the SR5s are routinely costing as much as 5th gen ORPs, with new ORPs exceeding price of previous gen Pros, and Pros reaching new price heights, there is some room left for Toyota to squeeze, it seems.

I remember similar types of posts in 2021 during Covid, chip shortages etc and people paying significantly more than MSRP for the old 5th Gen and other vehicles

Manufacturers own this now they throttle back production, all these dealers have only x allocations and so supply is better controlled allowing only those willing to spend the bigger bucks to get these units.

Until they run out of people who just have to have the newest, shiniest thing and the dealers have to offer discounts. I'm already seeing 2025 4Runners advertised below MSRP in my area.

    I find something very interesting.....

You don't have many of us 5th Gen users jumping on the 6th Gen. Which tells me the new 6th Gen owners are a whole different customer base that is probably new to the 4R and even to Toyota.

In contrast, on the 4th Gen tacoma, many of the folks there were died hard fans of the 3rd Gen and had no issues moving quickly into the 4Gen Taco. Of course the Taco vs 4R are a different segment, but it is clear to me at least on who are the new adopters of these new models.

I'll bet there are some 5th gen owners swapping out for the 6th gen. But, they are not the type of fifth gen owners that are on 4Runner forums.

Also, a lot of the members here chose the 4Runner for its simplicity and reliability. And, right now reliability Is unknown with the turbo 4.

I love my 5th Gen, and am not drawn to the 6th Gen in any way. I would likely buy a new Taco before a 6th Gen 4Runner. While I don't have any plans to replace my 4Runner at this point, somewhere down the road my next vehicle will likely be a Grenadier (if I can afford it at the time), or a diesel Hilux (if I move...probably more likely than the Grenadier).

If I may offer this thought: There's a reason why many 3rd Gen Tacoma owners call it a "TuRD". Toyota put a car engine in the Tacoma, and worse, made it a dog in the lower RPM range because they monkeyed with the valve timing. I beat TuRD Gen Tacomas off the line in my 2nd Gen from a stop light all the time. Of course, once the 3.5 gets wound up to high RPM they blow by, but how many people drive around in high RPM very often?

That's why I think 3rd Gen Taco owners are moving into the 4th Gen.

I think that is probably true based on what we see here and the 6th gen forum. What happens when these owners get bored in a year and jump ship to the next latest and greatest vehicle?

The 3.5 never played well with both available 6spd gearboxes either, which did not help

The 2.7L I4 in the 3rd gen Taco was the unsung hero of the platform. I sometimes drive the company fleet's inspection vehicles and in day to day driving it was 100% adequate and in its service life, as bullet proof as the 2nd gen 1GR we all may have heard about ;)

If the 2.7 was still available with the 6 speed manual toward the end, our 2nd 23 ORP might have instead been a Taco instead. Alas.

That being said, the front end of a 4th gen taco is a better look in my book than the 6th gen 4R.

I will be 64 next month. I have a 2nd Gen 2015 Tacoma and a 2019 5th Gen 4Runner. I'm planning to keep both and if I end up homeless, I will live out of one of them.

Yep. The 3rd Gen Tacoma, in my eyes, was an “oh crap we’ve got competition again” from Toyota. A stop gap until they could to a true redesign. The 3.5L and 6 speed wasn’t a great combo. While the 4.0L and the 5 speed in the 4Runner and 2G Taco may have not been the best combo either, that crown goes to the 4.7L V8 and the 5 speed (as someone who owned both), it was at least better than the 3.5L 6 speed combo.

Toyota just got caught resting on its laurels with the 3rd gen so they had to knock the 4th gen out of the park - and after driving one and a Land Cruiser, I’d say the 2.4L turbo and 8 speed take the crown over both the 2G taco, 3G taco, and 5G 4Runner.

Hol'up...am I reading your post right that the crown is for "mismatched motor/tranny combo"? I am having a hard time here figuring out here if the crown is a positive or negative...

I'm guessing positive. The 2UZ/A750 in my '03 was fabulous.

It will be interesting to see 6th gen sales numbers over the next 5 years. Considering the 4runner doesn't get newer and shiner that often, many appear to be waiting to see how reliability holds, and the fact tariffs could kick Toyotas ass, the sales numbers could very easily tank in the near future and it could be a huge flop
