Anyone have and real life experience with performance chip like those from RocketChip, Thorton or Chip Your Car? Can a $150.00 plug in chip really ad 40+HP to a 4Runner? Maybe I'm a skeptic, but sounds too good to be true.
    Thanks.

    Oooh look, another mod.....
If you think putting a performance chip in your 4Runner will give you more horsepower, then I have some ocean front property I'd like to sell you. It's in Arizona.

If you want quicker acceleration and the feel of "better butt dyno" performance, get a Banks Pedal Monster.

True. But any "chip" won't be 40 hp either.

I've always viewed it like this. If you want 25 more lb's of usable torque at the low end of the RPM change, improved throttle response and shift logic, a tune is the answer.
If you're on 35" tires a regear should have already been factored into the equation. That addressed the problem at it's source.

So unless OP is on 34s or 35s I don't think recommending a regear is the move personally.

Me personally will not mess with the powertrain with chips, tunes, throttle controllers, etc.. Powertrain is the biggest reason atleast me buy 5th gen 4Runner(s) over another makes more power.

I would just play with suspension, tires, lights, etc. If things go south the damage is just a blown fuse or a new shock. Not ruin the entire vehicle. I'm a scary guy, thats why I didn't even install raptor style grill lights to the INJ fuse. I used a dedicated wire harness with low amp fuse. (True it was a failed mod where the lights burnt out in few months ). My point is me personally try not to mess with the powertrain if reliability is your primary need.

Borla exhaust, Jet MAF sensor, K&N filter, Hayden rapid cool transmission cooler, Hella horns, electric fan, Pedal Commander, Derale power steering cooler,
I did my 97, but it was simple and $400. I would just send $150 and forget it. There's not much that changes any horsepower on a 4runner. I doubt it for $150. The OT Tune is $450. A Pedal Commander or Banks controller is a better investment. I wouldn't want anyone in my $2k ECU. A cold air intake doesn't do any more than just buying the tube they sell for the airbox to throttle body. I don't have a dyno, but increasingly the velocity in the tube is all the whole kit does. I get better mileage with a Fram air filter than a K&N. I use K&N cabin air filter. Washable, lifetime, requires no oil, just soap and water. Denso TT 100k plugs help a little bit. I'm using a Jet performance MAF sensor and some hotter coils, allegedly. I don't have pedal lag now with the Pedal Commander off like they usually do. I guess everything helped a bit. It's just a little bit. That's why they sell the supercharger. I would rather buy another good used 4runner for the money. I have driven blown 4runners and it's not worth it to me. The best power investment is probably regearing the differentials and an all aluminum performance radiator. You can tow easy, haul easy and plenty of torque which is what you want. I tried a throttle body also. Waste of money and I was warned. It works good especially at speed, but mine wanted to climb hills in 5th overdrive and it's not supposed to do that under a load. It's really for a V8 Lexus or Toyota, but fit and ran with an adapter plate.
