Catch Can?

I have installed catch cans on my other trucks (not 4R) before and amazed by the crap that ends up in there. Any others running cans in their late model 4Rs? Considering for my relatively new 2024 ORP. Always used JLT (now J&L).

I’ve heard this term before, but I’ve never understood it. Would you mind explaining who would want a catch can and why?

 

Well, quickly it filters gunk from your crankcase before it’s fed back to your intake. (Through the PCV). Do some You Tube browsing on the topic. The can will have the most disgusting crap in it to dump out every 1000 miles or so, more often in the cold months.

 

I dont think a catch can is needed in this application. Some of the Tacoma guys have it but no major gains really. Just another thing to watch/install/clean etc.

The 1GR-FE is known for it's longevity. If it needed a catch can, I would think the engineers at Toyota would have put one on. They didn't.

 

From my understanding of catch cans they may be beneficial on a direct injection engine but our toyota 1GR-FE port injected engines they're not needed.

 

Can you please explain why it would be more appropriate on one type of engine than the other? Not arguing. Just trying to learn.

 

My understanding of it and someone correct me if I'm wrong....direct injection is sprayed directly into the combustion chamber resulting in better fuel efficiency and performance but carbon/oil buildup on the valves is a common issue. In Port injection fuel is delivered into the cylinder via the intake valves which helps keep the valves clean of the carbon buildup. PPCV valves on direct injected engines help keep the oil/carbon from building up on the valves but still occurs. A catch can will capture the blow-by from direct injection to help keep those valves cleaner longterm. Eventually that carbon buildup will need to be removed from the valves. In Port Injection those valves are cleaned/washed from the fuel to keep them clean thus the PCV in our 4Runners does the job.

 

I'm running the same one. If it ain't broke, fix it until it is. The JLT-recommended mounting location isn't as tidy as in my Tacoma, due to heater hose routing. The bracket was digging into the VSV vacuum hose. I added some plastic split loom as chafe guards.

Exactly, the PCV is the "catch can" of our 4R engine.

 

I have one. It gets about 4oz of oil mist after 5K miles.

When I installed the blower on my Tacoma I saw how bad the lower intake manifold gets. It’s just something I want to avoid.

 

So it is catching like a mist or some sort of vapor/combo hence the small OZ you collect? Didn't know these things were used like that. Learn something new here.

 

Yeah it’s just the oil/moisture mix from the crankcase. It’s not an issue to worry about on most engines.

 

it will not hurt to have it. a must for OCD person. and it keeps the throttle plate clean, as less oil/water vapor gets into intake, especially on cold drive

 

I fully agree about the longevity of the 1GR-FE, what a great engine, it's good in a 4Runner. I believe there may be pros and cons for the catch can, but the part where engineers at Toyota would have put one on is.... well these are the same guys that gave us the wonderful needle bearing fiasco for how many years? Another thing would be; how many people are ever going to empty it, instead of letting it fill up and cause more headaches?

 

If offered from the factory, a valid point. If installed aftermarket, however, it's pretty likely the owner would maintain it.

 

If enough people on an internet forum say you need something, you need it. It's that simple.

 

Yes there's usually a mesh or steel wool that lets the oil come out of suspension and fall into the can.

 

I decided not to bother on my direct injection Theta II (yea, that one) and it went to 130k+ miles at the time of sale without issue although I’d still bet the bottom end will seize before intake valve carbon becomes an issue.

I remember reading something about Hyundai using VVT to try to keep the intake valve a little in the fuel spray to reduce build-up but not sure if it’s a major thing or if it came to me in a dream. But between that and the DI Honda’s in my care (ranging from 2015-2019MY) it definitely isn’t really on the radar as much as earlier German applications.

The 2.4’s other issues overshadowed carbon buildup anyway and I didn’t really hear about it being a major concern even on the few that made it to higher mileage. Some folks put on catch cans anyway though.

I’m not worried with our port injection and the throttle body doesn’t look like it gets that dirty over time anyway.

I don’t think I’d bother on a combined port/direct injection engine either.

 

Back in the day, we would use a water/oil catch for a shop air compressor and some hose. $170.00 is kind of crazy.

 

^There are $30 universal kits on Amz all day long; you just have to adapt the mounting bracket and hoses for your engine.

I try a couple different ones from ebay. This is the first one I still use. It's deeper and seems to actually work. I mounted on passenger fender for more room and access. I have seen people recommend mounting low on engine, but they collect a lot of oil. Sucking it out of engine is my guess. It should work anywhere for what does. I know short trips and especially colder weather, mine collects a lot of moisture and foamy oil. I just don't see hundreds of dollars for anything but style.

But searching Ebay for "Universal 750ML Oil Catch Can Kit Oil Separator" reveals plenty of options around the $20 USD price range.

 

This one had a brass or so multi metal that seemed to separate oil and vapor better than the second $30 one I tried. Honestly, I don't if it really does that much. Cleaning throttle body every 15k, synthetic oil eliminates a lot. I have seen examples of one almost full after 800 miles, but it was below the PCV valve and sucking oil from engine I suspect. I want to separate oil from the vapor and not the engine. Mine gets brown foamy oil moisture which is what it should be.
