Hey all, looking at purchasing this 2019 4Runner SR5 listed for $19,000 133k miles. Has a rebuilt title and has been updated and stuff. Just want to see what you guys think. Good deal in my opinion but wanted to see. Included is the photos provided after the accident that caused it to be considered totaled as well as photos of it now. Thanks in advance.

Also to note I would have this as my daily driver so not just buying as a toy to drive every once in a while.

    Call your insurance agent
Some states have different insurance for salvage titles, some states you cant get insurance on a salvage title vehicle.

Inspect it, obviously they had to cut the C-pillar out and likely replace it and the roof to fix what you see. It would be a great idea to inspect it and confirm its not a bunch of drilled holes they used to pull the panel straight and then spackled the holes and body work up with an inch of body filler. That C-pillar is critical in case of a roll-over, the roof is critical of the strength of the body and keeping you and the interior dry. Go over everything with a fine tooth comb, someone could have done a mexico special, hammered the panels straight'ish and layered an inch or two of bondo on and done a quick paint job and you may be rolling around in someones catastrophe

Thanks for the reply. I am going to have a pre-purchase 112-point inspection done on the vehicle tomorrow to make sure it is okay and safe to drive. If that comes back clean, then I would be interested in negotiating the price lower, to be honest... Looks like a great car, so I hope it is in good shape.

No expert, but that damage seems a bit more then just minor. I'd pass.

I’d be interested in WIP photos, not sure I’d trust the seller’s handiwork either way - how much of a discount is that compared to similar, clean-title models?

Can you explain what WIP photos mean? apologies. And looking at KBB for this model and year at this mileage and clean title, it says 27k-35k

    oh, I mean Work-in-progress

anyways, I’m not sure that’s enough discount but depends on the individual, risk, trust, insurance, etc.

check auto listings for similar vehicles, KBB may vary from the market.

Thanks for the input. I'm going to get a 112-point pre-purchase inspection tomorrow and want them to check it all out. If it comes back clean, I really want to jump on it as it's a decent price. Just trying to figure out if I'm making a huge mistake at this point. Seems like the only concern would be if I flipped it and the structural integrity of the roof...

I wouldn't buy a salvage vehicle (unless it was my own, and I was paying salvage price, not whatever this is).

Someone who makes their living based on the value of cars decided it wasn't worth fixing. Then, someone else bought it, has fixed it, and is trying to sell it for a profit. Do you want to be the one paying for that profit?

You know those guys' job is just to make you feel better; they don't have any liability if they miss something.

Yeah, I guess that is a good point... Dang thought I was getting a good deal with it being $19,000... Would it be worth it to offer like $15,000? I don't plan on reselling this vehicle at all either.

Do you feel safe driving a vehicle with this damage being repaired?

Well, all the repairs are already done. The current owner has been driving it and says there are no issues. It has a rebuilt title already, so that is why I thought it was less of a concern...

Is the current owner also the repair person? If so, do they have a business and reviews or can the owner direct you to who did the work?

I misread the post. Do you feel comfortable the repair shop put the vehicles roof back to factory condition? Is saving $10K worth it to you? I don't know how it was repair but the structural integrity had to be compromised. Are there pics of the repair process?

Are you set on a 5th Gen? Would a little older model year with a clean tittle work?

Well I am not set on it but it being a 2019 and seeing as I could probably get him down to $17,000 on price I thought it would be a good deal. especially since the repairs look to have been don really well and cerfited by the state of FL

I mean I would say yes but I am not a mechanic so I may not know what I am getting myself into for the future with any leaks or whatever may come from it. I dont plan on flipping the vehicle anytime soon so I would assume I'd be good as long as i dont do that lol

"Minor damage" ????? :itllbuffout: :der: $19,000.00????? A big no thanks. Pass-a-moon-doh. There will be lots hidden issues / future issues with that wreck, IMHO.

Nothing personal. I don't buy wrecked vehicles. But that's just me. Too fussy about my equipment and vehicles.

It’s easy to make a car look good in photos or even in person.

It’s the quality of the work underneath that’s the mystery from whatever wiring, structural, etc. effort went in.

We can’t stop you but if you want to go for it, you gotta go over it with a fine tooth comb and also not blindly trust any X-point inspection as the mechanic isn’t the one who has to live with it. (Ex. make sure the rear door even opens and seals properly.)

I don’t think it’s worth more than its purchase price with that much baggage. But if you want to decide it’s worth 17k then that’s your decision. Same way you can go to a dealer and finance a ‘13 Altima at 36% for 84 months if you really wanted.

However, it’s my opinion that it’s best to “buy once, cry once” if you are able.

"Buy once, cry once." Never heard that one before. To me, it seems that if there are no leaks or seal issues, then damage to the roof seems rather insignificant unless I plan on flipping it. Don't see how roof damage at the place in the car will affect how the car runs or works. But I am utterly ignorant in this space, as I am not a mechanic and have never purchased a rebuilt title vehicle.

The powertrain is probably completely unaffected, but there’s wiring, airbags, that run around the vehicle too and it takes a lot of time and effort to get things lined up like it was out of the factory.

If those were repaired shoddily if not just wallpapered over it could be a whole can of worms and that’s assuming the single angle photo was the only damage.
