    Hello All,

I have a metal oil filter housing (replaced original plastic), a friend of mine said he places large magnets on it as a way of pulling metal particles out of the oil.

He is sure he gets more particles than just from the drain bolt magnet.

    Thoughts?

Isnt the "metal" oil filter housing made out of die cast aluminum?

If it’s going through the filter it’s probably getting caught anyway.

If I were to put on additional magnets, I’d just leave them on the pan but they’ll probably do more good on the transmission pan since this engine is already solid (transmission too but fluid is changed less often) - but that’s my personal opinion.

Interesting, did he supply photos if he is sure he gets more particles with the magnet?

Add some magnets to your fuel lines to straighten out the molecules.

There are three ways these ancient engines fail - oil sludging from lack of oil changes, head gasket leaks, and warped heads from overheating. The oil filter magnet addresses none of these.

Also gotta remember bearings are usually made of non magnetic material so a magnet will do nothing.

I still see absolutely zero advantage changing out the plastic oil filter housing for the cast aluminum model. There is nothing wrong with the OEM plastic housing. Even if you are a hardcore offroader, if your skid plate gets smashed enough to break off the plastic filter element holder, it will damn sure bust the cast aluminum filter holder.

I disagree, in your example, I believe the cast aluminum would be less likely to crack. I think if the skid plate was pushed up onto the oil filter, the plastic would give way before the metal.

You realize the filter is about 12 inches above! I would worry about more stuff, pulleys, crank shaft end, engine block, water pump before! Many plastic oil filter housing out there with many 100 of thousands of miles without cracking!

Totally unnecessary. Theres 4 magnets in your oil pan placed in channels which pick up debree (they get cleaned off when you go change your fluid). Kind of like how a lot of drain plugs are magnetic but there 4 of them instead of the one magnetic plug. Four. Thats 400% more magnets.

Its already got plenty of magnets. This is a solution for a problem that doesnt exist.

completely agree, but if smashed I’d think the aluminum would hold up better than the plastic.

The aluminum filter housing is more robust against overtightening. Takes very little effort to tweak the plastic housing and create a leak. I've done 13 oil changes on my Tacoma and broken two plastic housings, once in 2021 and once last year. If it leaks again I'll buy the aluminum one.

Yea, and I’d add it as you can’t clean those without dropping the pan but you can pull off a magnet when you drain fluid as well.

But this thinking also came to me in a dream.

The way I look at it, if you got big ol magnets on your oil filter to “catch” something big enough to hold onto, the damage is already too late?
I mean I’m not saying don’t try and reinvent the wheel, but 50% of maintenance is caused by 50% of maintenance

I've done a heck of alot more than 13 oil changes between my 2010 4R and my 19 4R and never cracked the plastic oil filter housing. But I also don't over tighten the OEM plastic filter element holder either.

If it makes you sleep better at night thinking the cast aluminum housing is far superior over the OEM plastic one, have at it. I believe that the Toyota engineers would not have put a plastic filter housing on a vehicle that is made for off-roading. Even if my plastic housing would start to leak, you can bet your ass that I'll be buying an OEM genuine Toyota plastic housing. But I don't for see that happening. There are a few guys that are approaching 400000 miles on the other 5th gen forum that still have the original plastic housing.

I use rare earth magnets from HF for years. First i put them on the oil filter itself, then after 5K miles i opened the filter and there definitely was some grime in the area where the magnets were attached. Since then i use them on all my vehicles, my tractors, ZT mowers, motorcycle. Also, i drilled the holes in the oil drain plugs and installed magnets in them, in ones which didn't have it from the manufacturer as well as differential, Also attached on hydraulic filters of my tractors.

They don't do any harm but if they give some benefit, it is cheaper than the ink i write this post with.

    Now you can start

Lots of manufacturers use magnets on drain plugs or in pans. They can't hurt anything. They can most definitely help by grabbing wayward bits of metal from lodging somewhere they shouldn't be and capture them for future analysis.
