Will be in 4Runner so no trunk.

Refer to handgunlaw.us. There's a wealth of information there, including state reciprocity agreements and rules for each state, and it's updated regularly.

Love that console. Just to be extra safe when i do travel in states with strict gun laws, I just disassemble it and put the parts in different parts of the car. Then technically i dont have a "gun" in the car. Is it overkill? Maybe but i dont want to find out i did it wrong

Until you realize the law perceives a lower receiver as the firearm itself.

I suggest researching the carry laws in the states you are going to visit. Don't rely on the information provided on a Toyota 4Runner forum lol.

Make sure you have a gun sticker on your truck too, to deter gun theft of course

I once hear someone say "Its better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6". If it was me, I would take it with me. Better to have it and not need it, as opposed to the alternative.

    Just my $0.02

Here in Nevada, you would be just fine.

Yes the advice above about checking the law for each state you drive through is good. Maybe take the long way around ;-)

In my state carrying in the console or glove box is expressly forbidden. Even with a console safe. But carrying in the back of the car in a duffle bag with the flimsiest of luggage locks on the zipper meets the requirement, though anyone with a pocket knife or scissors could get to the gun in seconds. Go figure.

    Oooh look, another mod.....
It's important for the OP to remember this:

    • Federal Law: Remember that federal law also applies, particularly regarding interstate transportation of firearms. The Firearm Owners’ Protection Act (FOPA) provides some protection for individuals transporting firearms across state lines, but specific requirements must be met.
Now, New Hampshire, Vermont & Maine allow for Constitutional Carry, Mass/Conn/RI do not. He's legal to transport his gun(s) from his home state to Maine. But like everyone else said, check the state's website where you will be staying and educate yourself on the local laws.

NJ has diabolical semi auto pistol laws, and I believe strict ammo/ bullet laws too - best to route around NJ.

I know it's been challenged but the law is/was technically that you cannot stop in the state of New Jersey without meeting their laws. No gas, no food, no taking a piss. Even if it's unenforceable I would not want to deal with some overzealous LEO.

The problem with anti-gun states is things taken out of context, and when the 4Runner doesn't have a functional separate trunk, things get really iffy even if you're in the right.

The law you're referring to is a Federal law, not just a state thing.

^^^^^ This. As far as I can tell, there is no way to be SURE you are in compliance with NJ laws. I would just go around NJ.. NY is not much better BTW.

to be on the safe side, Id keep it unloaded and the mag pulled out. I believe only reciprocity is covered when youre carrying it loaded on your person not loaded in a car. Check the reciprocity maps

Yep NJ is a joke can only use hollow points in your house, but have to swap out and use FMJs on the street. Yeah that make perfect sense.

oh and no more than 10 rounds for anything. Wtf!

Correct. 10 round mag limit, no hollow points. Ammo and gun must be separate for transport and out of reach.
