For those that have traveled the off road trails for a few days at a time what are you seeing for fuel range? I am trying to determine how much extra fuel to bring. I understand a lot of different factors go into fuel range (speed, terrain, altitude gains, added gear, etc). I am just looking at best and worst case scenarios to make sure I am prepared. Thank you for your time..

    Oooh look, another mod.....

    ^^ This.

Because of the following factors you’ll receive similar MPG’s:

    1) Idling a lot while you wait your turn on the trails or keeping the motor running so you can sit in the a/c while you’re sleeping in your 4Runner.
    2) Weight. Those big ass tires, that roof top tent and alllllllll that other gear will put a dent in those MPG’s.

The best I have gotten was 6.8 mpg. Worst was 3.8. rock crawling in Moab.

Stock, rolling around an off-road park, nothing crazy netted me a hair under 7 MPG calculated by filling up in the way out.

Wow, I was really expecting closer to 10mpg than 5.
Thank you all for the input..

On the white rim trail, I was getting 10ish, that’s the lowest I’ve gotten yet, but my next mod will probably be something to carry more fuel.

I averaged about 9.5 mpg going 10-15mph over 20 miles in 4 Lo. That probably a best case scenario.

Uphill Forest trail segments at ~6000', +350 lbs gear, 4Lo between 4 mpg to 6 mpg. Flat tracking in the forest I generally can get 6-12 mpg.

Wow, I had no idea that mpg was so bad for extended off-road driving.

The “carry more fuel mod” is what is exactly what is fueling my question… Trying to determine what my 4hi range would be when loaded with gear in order to better plan routes. I am a recovering jeepaholic so I am on the 4Runner learning curve.

Careful man, that's a very expensive mod!

The great thing is, it can be mounted in place of the spare and adds to your existing 21 gallon tank. Imagine buying 45 gallons of gas for your rig in one sitting.

Sometimes I dream of putting that into a GX and importing a rear door that has the requisite supports for a mounted spare for both a factory (ish) fitted spare and extra fuel.
