I have a 2010 trail edition with a 3 inch lift and a Radflo suspension see picture. I really want run the 285 7517s but I don’t wanna Dick with gearing or crazy modifications. I should mention also the front bumper is not factoryIMG_6623.png

thank you that’s exactly what I needed with some advice. What about the gearing? Is it really necessary most of the time I drive the car in the city. This is a picture of my current fender. What are your thoughts?image.jpg

285/75/17 is going to require some trimming and almost certainly a body mount chop to clear. The firewall might require a few mallet kisses, too.

Most folks would probably want to regear with that tire size. There is member who ran this size without a regear and said it was fine. Others have regeared on stock size tires to compensate for added weight, or towing. You can always give it a shot and regear later if you want to.

FWIW, I'm on 295/70/17's, which are a tad shorter than 285/75/17. I haven't regeared, but, I'm considering it. I don't mind it in regular city driving. But, I pretty much can't use D on the freeway. It will downshift nonstop. So, I leave it in S4 and cruise along at 3000+ RPM's. I also believe that a regear will help a lot with low speed maneuvering off-road.

thank you so much for your comprehensive reply. I really appreciate it. Let me ask you this. What do you think about 285 7017 will they go right on no issue in your opinion with my 3 inch lift currently? And thanks for all your help.

I guess I’m looking for the sweet spot the happy medium so that I could do some aggressive crawling, but still use it utilitarian wise and practically where I live

I run 285/75/17 Yokohama Geolandar MTs on a 2013 Trail Edition. If you do any type of off-roading you are probably going to rub without modification (wheel offset will affect scrub angle)

You can get away with a BMC - I recently went with the DRT CMR
Trim fender liners - I have since install the C4 liners and trimmed my fenders
Flatten pinch welds - this is where I rub a bit but I have a rather aggressive wheel offset. I would also suggest SPC UCAs so you can push your caster to 4+ degrees

I am also regeared, have a tune, and a trans cooler. I will say the regear was probably one of the best mods I have done to date. And similar to Thatbassguy, I drive primarily on S4 and only put it into S5 once I am on the freeway and on relatively flat surface. Once I start any type of climb, I shift back into S4. I am constantly monitoring trans and torque converter temps

I feel like 285/70/17 is kind of the sweet spot for these. However, you'll need to do some minor plastic trimming. You can probably get away without a body mount chop with a good alignment. Also, you can get a lot of tires this size in an SL load range, which is ideal for maintaining decent fuel economy and ride quality.

I have 285's with no lift and it was removing the front mud flaps and some minor trimming of the front of the fender flare that comes down along the bumper. Nothing terrible at all.

BMC and lots of plastic trimming.

The regear certainly depends on your use case.
I run 34's (285/75/17) on stock gears. Buuut I live in Texas. Near sea level means my engine has plenty of oxygen and makes decent power. Texas also doesn't have many mountain passes; Just the occasional rolling hills. So for me, it wasn't necessary. Also, if you DON'T have KDSS, a full 34" spare fits in the spare tire location. So no need for a rear bumper/ swingout.

Still, I did move forward with an OTT tune which helped with low end torque. It also stopped gear hunting which was an issue even on 33s. Worth noting here I run about 400# worth of armor and bumpers.

Side note. My off roading group affectionately calls 285/75/17 "baby 35s" Since most 35's are actually about 34.6" tall. Meaning you'd only gain about 1/4" of sidewall height by going to most brand's 35s. I think it's a great size for these rigs.

@op, ask yourself the objective of why you want to run the tires you are wanting to run. The bigger you go, the more hassle :spending:and crap you have to deal with. 285s/70/17 is the sweet spot for the 4R. More than that and you are getting into different territory. Good luck.

I appreciate all your guys’s input. Let me ask a question starting to get into some black diamond shit slowly given my 3 inch lift on my 2010 trail edition is it really gonna help me immensely to have a 34 inch tire versus a 33 inch tire? I know it’s a stupid question but I’m new right now I’m running 265/70 / 17 ko2

No. 285/70/17 will get you through 80% of things out there. My small group ranges tire size from 33" - 35" and tire size has not been the limiting factor. What will make a difference is EXPERIENCE, WEIGHT, a decent set of LT tires + airing down, a good spotter, and a rear locker . I have done my share of trails in Utah and Colorado and I have never thought "Bigger tires would have made that easier".

Now if you are talking about tackling the Rubicon...then that's another beast in itself...
