What have you done to your 5th Gen 4Runner today?

Found an absolutely absurd deal on a PAIR of ADD spare tire carriers from Marketplace. My next big project on the rig is to go high-clearance in the rear, so one of my first steps was relocating the spare.

I bolted the carrier to my cargo slide and ordered a y-strap to keep the wheel secure. There’s no denying that the spare is easier to access, but obviously that’s at the expense of losing that cargo space. I kept the OEM spare mechanism installed for now and just zip tied it up out of the way in case I ever need to use it again.






I have a weekend trip to Windrock Park coming up, so I’ve been doing quite a bit these last few weeks to get everything as dialed in as I can:

 

Got the cat shields bolted up. Hopefully enough of a deterrent to send someone to the next car if they come along.

 

I like the idea of the ADD. Thanks for this.
Wonder if this could be a solution for future 35” spare

 

A 35” tire would be pretty tight, height wise. My 265/70/17 spare fits great with maybe a couple inches of clearance from the hatch opening. The ADD carrier is nice and wide so you could probably deflate the spare to gain a bit more room.

 

Appreciate the feedback, and you’re probably right. I don’t have a platform in the cargo area, and once in a while I’ve strapped my 33” spare back there and it may have had enough room for a 35.

problem is 35” likely wont fit under my 4R and it takes up clearance. someone told me they fit their 35x11.5 tho..dunno if KDSS 4Runners have the same amount of space as non-KDSS either.
I do have my roof basket for temporary tire transport, but in the middle of maneuvers I don’t like that - I wouldn’t mind a solid rear cargo area spare holder like dat.

Without the slide I think a 35” could work! I too thought about sticking it up on my roof rack but my steelies and tires are heavy and hoisting them above my head and onto the rack was miserable in practice, plus like you said, the center of gravity changes didn’t seem ideal.

 

Dude yeah! That’s the thing too, it’s quite difficult to throw my wheel on top 7’ up

 

Right? I set myself a limit when I started watching those damn YouTube videos on how to put 35s on your 5th gen. 5 to 6 grand. That’s it. No more. After I put on my new roof rack and hidden grill lights next week. I’ll be right at 22,500.00. Oh well limits are to be broken, I guess.

I am surprised that the USGS service did not place an official Geodetic Marker on that stone!

drove the family in the 4R to the epic Otter Co-Op Outdoor Experience children’s waterpark. Dried our wet shorts on my mobile clothesline.

I predicted tediousness, and tedious it was. I had a little helper tho. 5/16” ss shackle holds its position tight now, zero rattle. Required 3x3/8” rubber wire grommets + 1/2” nylon spacer.

 

Patience is a virtue very few have and you my friend have it in spades!

More like what happened vs what I did. Reminding that my 2019 is trouble free than my 2021 with this safety sense stuff..

Dang! I exercised bad judgment and - despite careful assessment - took an unreasonably difficult line. The predicament got ugly fast. Mud. Moguls. Ruts. Logs. I’m astonished Gulo got out (had to really work for the first time) and am amazed the primary damage is a nasty paint scratch on the rear bumper from climbing out of a crevice. I beat the crap out of the stock skid plate but it has always been targeted for replacement.

Wow! This machine is incredibly capable. Holy comoly! I was a total idiot despite a firm commitment to taking it easy. When I got out and walked around the vehicle to look for damage, although it was covered in mud, I contemplated taking a picture of the quagmire of hell but didn’t to avoid lasting evidence of such stupidity

I was certain a wheel alignment was in order so had it checked and everything is fine. I inspected the entire underbody and am elated nothing is damaged. Of course I handled the vehicle proficiently to enable getting out… and with minimal carnage… but Gulo is truly the star. I shouldn’t have tackled that section! I must also give a big shout out to the Bridgestone Dueler A/T Ascent tires for performing so effectively in brutal muddy conditions.

 

Yep, so annoying. When you drive for a while and restart it goes away. I have a feeling it's some heat related thing. The camera lens acting as a magnifying glass and heat the image sensor. After driving like 20-30minutes and restart it goes away. Immediate restart won't work.
