Hey yall I have a 2006 SR5 4runner and noticed this quiet rattling/clicking/grinding noise in the center to passenger side dash. The sound does not happen all the time but does happen when the truck is both on and off. This video is when it's off. Does anyone know what is causing this sound and how to fix it? Thanks!

Is your AC on when it's making this noise? Sounds like a stuck blend door actuator.

    Cheers,

    Sean

OK, I'm still thinking it's the blend door actuator that is sticking. It has a way to try and unstick itself at random times when it detects that it isn't in the position it should be in!

    Cheers,

    Sean

I had a lexus RX300 that did something just like this.
It’s been a few hot minutes ago but I remember I took it out and repositioned it to one side/fully, reassembled it and it never happened again. There was a YouTube video for it I followed at the time

You reposition the blend door actuator or something else?

    Repositioned the door

I see some YouTube videos for 4Runners to do such a thing.
On the RX I did it wasn’t a difficult job..z

Would you be able to explain what you did to reposition the door? Thanks!

Mine made a weird 'gurgling/clicking' noise as well. I replaced the door actuator on the drivers side and it went away. Like others have said i believe it was sticking or something. I would start researching blend door actuators and stuff for 4th gen 4runners. The drivers side one was easy to replace, but i've heard the passenger side ones are harder to get to.

I forgot to mention... my Limited has dual climate control and that went out which is why i replaced the blend door actuator. i got lucky that also resolved my 'gurgling/clicking' noise. If you don't have dual climate control its probably one of the passenger side door actuators.

Hi, thanks for the response. Mine is not dual climate. It only seems to do it upon initial start up, then goes away. I may take out the glove box to pinpoint the noise more. Thanks!

If it only happened when the AC was running, I would suggest removing your cabin air filter and checking the top of the fan. I had a weird noise like that once. Pulled the cabin air filter and found a walnut sitting on top of the fan, which is mounted horizontally. The walnut bounced around like a roulette ball whenever the fan was on.
