like me and probably many others, their 4rnr is like a F140 to them. Id be pissed if mine got stolen and had to replace it with something else. Its my baby and no one elses.

We should ask Africans if they do their oil changes at 5k intervals or hold out 10k?

    Oooh look, another mod.....

I get it, I guess. I do value the property I own. I have pride of ownership and don't want it lost, damaged or stolen. But I know that it can be replaced. This isn't a car that was handed down from grandfather, to father to me that I would pass down to my kid or grandkid.

It's an effin' 4Runner. It won't be in my life forever.

I passed my 2011 SR5 to my son. Had more valued to me to keep it in the family, then sell it.

Mine will be with me hopefully for a long time because im not getting one of those damn 6th gens. F that!

Earlier this year we took a trip near the U.S. Mexico border and I was concerned about vehicle theft too. Rented an SUV and then the morning of departure discovered that it had low pressure in one of the tires. Took the 4Runner instead. Glad I did. Just take the dang 4Runner and don't leave anything enticing in the cab when you park. My Wrangler got totaled by a drunk driver in front of my house. Sometimes stuff happens and sometimes it doesn't.

Some easy deterrents are worth it. The Club and Airtag. And think about where you leave the truck, some areas are just to high risk.

That still doesn't mean throwing caution to the wind.
Its smart to still have a deterrent in place.

Nope. One of the reasons I got the Off Road model - manual transfer case lever that I engage, not some solenoid. Known too many people who when they turned that dial (not just on a 4R), 4wd would not engage and they were stuck. Owner's manual explains the operation - including the fact that if the transfer case is left in neutral, the vehicle can roll away if the parking brake is not set securely! (My 4R is a 2022 model.)

Absolutely! When the transfer case is in Neutral that means front and rear drivetrains are disconnected from the transmission and each other. So it doesn't matter if the transmission is in Park. The vehicle can free wheel. In most vehicles, if you are going to tow them, say behind a motor home, you put the transfer case in neutral which allows the wheels/tires to rotate freely.

ive noticed that this vehicle lacks basic safety in terms of transmission shifting.. you can just cycle from p to d and d to p without any need for pressing the brake to release the tranny

:edit: sorry i meant R to D, P does require brake - but there is no "Catch" to get into R

have you tried this with a 4runner because those are jeep instuctions. I have a dial 4wd system which is in neutral all the time until you engage it and my 4runner doesnt roll away while in park. Im pretty sure my 2011 SR5 is the same but i cant test it because my son has it.

when you’re flat towing a 4runner you need to put the transmission in neutral and leave the lever in 2 high, you should never move it to neutral when you’re towing it. You also need a driveshaft disconnect so the main driveshaft is not spinning which can damage the trans pump because its not getting lubricated when the engine is off. Im sure theres vids about flat towing a 4rrn out there

toyota must think people have common sense not to shift a moving car from D to R, but then again maybe theyre hoping the dont so they can make $$ by their stupidity.

I didn't mean that post to be about towing a 4R. Only to illustrate that when you have the transfer case in Neutral on a part-time, manual shift transfer case like is in my 4R Off-Road model, the drivetrain will be disconnected from the transmission and the vehicle WILL roll away even if the transmission is in Park. Again, that comes straight from my owner's manual. I have 4 other vehicles with part-time 4wd systems and they are all like that. I have no idea of what it would take to actually tow a 4R Off-Road model; I'd have to research that.

If thrives want your 4Runner, they are going to get it one way or another. While I was traveling across country in 2019, I stayed at a Hampton Inn in Little Rock Arkansas. Came out the next morning and my 5x8 trailer was gone. Never got it back. After that, I bought another trailer and this time I put a gps tracker in the trailer. Every time the trailer moves, I receive a text message on my phone and the app shows the exact location of the trailer even when it is in motion. This unit is powered by 3 lithium batteries and the batteries last for 2 to 3 years. Won’t stop the thieves, but, lets you know where they are at. IMG_1618.jpg IMG_1618.jpg IMG_1619.jpg

^Stopping the thieves isn't realistic, but slowing them down is. Not counting 40-sec relay attacks, normally it takes 15-20 min to break in, clone a key, and drive off. It's easy to do a few things to double their time.

All trackers require a cell signal to transmit. Parking the vehicle in an underground garage or using a cell phone hammer defeats the tracker. https://www.jammer-store.com/

Yes, with the manual lever, if you leave the position of the lever in N, it disengages both sets of axles from the transfer case. If your car is in Park, and your 4WD lever is in N and you're parked on a hill, prepare for a roller coaster ride...

    Cheers,

I live in Ottawa, a 2 hour drive from Montreal. There is no way I’m taking my 4Runner there for a weekend. Take your other vehicle and enjoy the peace of mind.

Layers of deterrent & protection is key. I implement a few levels of deterrence and ways of handling an active situation. Luckily i'm usually not far from my 4R if someone tries to break in and if i may, like leaving at an airport, ill take an Uber. I hate taking an Uber. lol

Your entire argument is getting carried by ambiguous "a thief with determination" when in reality vast majority are looking for easy targets. When a car thief looking for a target, they are not looking to steal your 4Runner, they are looking to steal a truck or maybe a Toyota truck that uses specific types of wireless keys. They will move on to easier target if they see a club and not have to cut the steering wheel, cannot easily unlock the truck due to RFD pouch, etc.
