I'm in snowy upstate NY. This morning i found my 2018 sr5 4runner rear window will not go up or down. Took it to my mechanic who said the window motor seized up. He stated it's going to cost me $1400 for parts (that are on backorder).
He went on tell me the clip that attaches the window to the motor breaks routinely when attaching to new motor and Toyota only sells the clips on new windows. What's even better is they said "if". If it breaks when reattaching the window to the motor they have use a whole new window. I asked about the part number for the clip, I asked if I could use non oem parts And kept being told by him and dealership that toyota only sells the window "kit" and there is nothing I can do. Does this make sense to anyone? I'm having them lock the window up until I can figure out a plan. I asked if the clip breaks can they still lock it in the up postion and was told not possible. If the clip breaks the window is useless and I'd be driving with no window until new one arrives.

    A couple of thoughts
    - Any chance of finding a liftgate window in the junkyard?
    - Would your insurance cover a broken rear window?

Hello!! I JUST worked on my 2017 4Runner last night with this EXACT ISSUE!! I pulled the panel off of the rear hatch frame and cleaned the absolute crap out of the mechanism and then we lubed up the pulley system really well after cleaning it out and now it works perfectly well!! Hope this helps AND saves you 1400!!
