    Hey Everyone,
So for all you off-roaders, how do you protect the paint on your 4Runner? I have '19 SR5 Premium and don't want to worry about the paint scratching from bushes and such. We wanted to test out the 4WD this weekend on a little desert adventure, but chose to ride around in the '03 Tacoma. The paint is trashed on that one...

    Thanks!

Ceramic paint protection... There are many different brands so I would definitely research them. I'm sure there are a couple of folks on here that use it and hopefully chime in.. :)

Was going to put a coat of wax on my runner today and saw this post while taking a break cleaning in the garage, did a little googling and the ceramic paint protect jgcaps suggested was solid. Looks like there are some inexpensive diy kits. I’ll post my findings and results.

Ceramic paint coatings really aren't gonna do much for abrasion resistance; despite the many scattered claims on the internet of "9H" hardness, etc.

They hold up to the elements (longevity) better than a paint sealant. And yes they offer some protection from environmental fallout. But as far as scratches go, don't get your hopes up.

Agreed you rub it to much against sticks it's gonna scratch. Save the money (and effort) just buy yourself any decent brand car wax and don't rub it against anything.

That's what I do...but then I go and rub it on stuff... You're bound to get some pin stripes if you take it of road much. I've just accepted the fact that 1-2 times a year I'm gonna give her a good wax on wax off. :D

Ok, so after a little more research ceramic is more effort than I was willing to do in one sitting for paint protection. Usually wax twice a year with compound and finish every car wash with liquid wax touch up, going to stick my regular maintenance. Turt.. wax products have always been good to me.

No way around it..you off road enough..you'll get paint stripes.
I agree that the fancy coating only go so far...I've had them done and believe that traditional wax 2x year is best.

So, these spray on rinse off coatings are becoming really popular. Literally, you spray on the paint surface and then rinse it off with a strong jet of water. That's it.

I've not tried one but I'm active on the Autogeek detailing forum and people just love this product. Even professional detailers and long-time detailing enthusiasts report great results.

Thanks for the feedback and input everyone. We have an '03 Tacoma that we've used for all off-roading. We figured we'd get 4WD with my new '19 T4R thinking it would also be more comfortable going off road being 16 years newer than the Tacoma. My '05 T4R was not 4WD. We don't off road a ton, but we do like to explore the off the beaten path trails etc where we live in the desert. I am thinking we will stick with the Tacoma for a while in the areas we are unfamiliar with. The paint is totally shot on that one. I'm barely ready to drill a hole in the dust cap to put in the LED headlights, so definitely not ready for scratches on the paint.

We took delivery of ours last weekend.
I worked Expel into the loan.
Full front clip (bumper, mirrors, hood & fenders), then added A-pillars, door rockers and rear bumper.
It is pricey at around $3k but for a black vehicle that will never need those areas waxed or buffed...
Also, it has a 10yr warranty! If it tears from a rock. They will replace it. If uv fades it, they will replace it!
The place doing it does all the Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Bentleys etc in town.
I will post pics when it is installed!
Not sure of self healing properties; we shall see.
We did go with the clay bar & ceramic coating finish.

Xpel now has a Ceramic coating too. You should ask the place that is installing your xpel ppf to use the xpel Fusion Ceramic coating as well.

Yes, they will clay bar the entire vehicle and use the fusion ceramic coating.
For the cost of the vehicle and the fact we keep vehicles for over 10 yrs. We went all out. Just not a full wrap. Money still matters!
Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.
