Hi all, I’m new to this site and my 87 4Runner, and no stranger to fixing things, but this was a new one for me. When I first went to check out this 87 with the 22re, the seller was pretty upfront telling me he had gotten it in a trade for some bodywork he’d done for the PO, it had been sitting for some time and he hadn’t spent much time on it other then getting it running and taking a few short distance drives in it.He did mention the PO told him that he had some engine work done, but didn’t know the extent or mileage. It started easy, and drove well. It did raise a flag when he I opened the radiator cap (cold) and coolant spurted out, I immediately suspected a head gasket, but it wasn’t a deal breaker. It did overheat on the way home around 7 miles out, but after cooling down and topping off made it the last 4/5 miles fine. So yesterday I started it with the vacuum gauge plugged in and got 20”s with a steady needle, which was a good sign. Then I did a compression test, 175#s, all cylinders, which was encouraging. Then I did a cylinder leakage test, to see if I could locate the problem cylinder, all cylinders showed minimal leakage, and no bubbles in the radiator, which I thought was odd. So I started putting the plugs in one at a time and cranked the engine over to see if I can find the leak. #1 and 2 were ok but I got Moby Dick whale spouting on 3 & 4.
So I’m perplexed here, how it didn’t show up on the compression or cylinder leakage test, and doesn’t bleed coolant into the cylinders when cold. Is it possible that whoever did work on the engine didn’t torque the head bolts properly or re torque them after a few miles? Just wondering if this is how this engine usually acts when the head gasket goes bad, and is there anything else I should be looking for?
I’m ok with replacing the gasket, having the head checked for being true, might as well check the timing chain and while I’m in there but figure I’d check the torque first. Sorry for the long post, thanks for your reply.
