What have you done to your 5th Gen 4Runner today?

Yessir! Engineer Head on me wants to make a proper bill of materials, illustrated assembly instructions, and all that jazz, certainly crediting Saker with the original research. I've seen a few of Toyota's instruction sheets and would love to be able to create a document in similar style. (Yeah, I'm nerdy like that.)

Someone on the other forum suggested kitting the parts and selling the kits -- tempting!

Lazy Head says I'm taking next week off from work, and won't spend much time around a computer... will get back to this project afterward.

 

When I did this mod, I thought about kitting it out but didn’t think it would be worth the time and effort for the return.

This mod is really easy once you source the parts required. Had I known one needed a more detailed instruction sheet with photos, I would have done that.

 

DJ, do not use stainless bolts. It’s too soft. This was the instructions from a mechanical engineer friend of mine. (Same one that designed our rear tire carrier)
You need at least grade 8 zinc coated.
Don’t use bought studs either. They are too soft and will break. Ask me how I know!
One can use stainless or black onyx acorn nuts without issue.
Follow the mod instructions and source at lease what is written. If you can make those purchases locally, then great.

I’m sure once I have the parts in hand, it’ll be a snap. I’m just that sort who’s got to be able to see something before I think I understand it well enough. And writing operator instructions is part of what I do for a living….

 

Sounds good to me.
I was an operator for many years and I wrote many equipment startup /shutdown procedures that are still being used in my previous plant today.

 

Does anyone have a site where to order all the hardware need for TRD Skid attachment mod?? Like someone said Can re-use the existing 2 Retaining washers.

Same battery in my wife's RX330 just came up slow to turn over this morning at 4 years and 1 mo. I'll have to replace tonight. Was not helped by her daughter leaving the interior light on overnight last week... I was surprised it started then.
I've had good luck with the Everstart. I used to use Die Hard on the thinking that there is always a Sears in town regardless of where you are. Well, now Walmart is the new Sears.

When I keep it under 70mph with our aerodynamic equivalent of a standing brick that's pretty normal for me.

That's why I chuckle when I see people bragging they are getting 20-21mpg with the 6th gen.

I’m checking out a big store today called The Bolt Supply House for the first time.

 

I replaced the dash cam in my 4Runner yesterday.

The existing FitCamx that I had was almost two years old and it worked great, but the time/date stamp would un-sync. Not a big deal because the video was still excellent 4k quality, but it really bugged me and messed with my OCD. I did some Google research and found that the reason was because the internal battery was dying; thus causing it to not stay sync'd. At first I thought, I'll crack it open and replace the battery.

NO. It is sodered to the circuit board. Luckily, Amazon is very liberal with their return policy. I bought a new FitCamX and sent back my old one. Easy Peasy. Even Swap. I took the 256Gig MicroSD card out of my old one and popped it in my new one.

There are a few minor differences on the new one vs my old one.

Old one:

1) The Wifi name was FitCamx(randomlettersandnumbers)
2) You could record a video up to 5 mins.
3) The time-date stamp was kind of small.

New one:

1) The Wifi name is Cam_Cam_(randomlettersandnumbers)
2) The max video length is 3minutes. You actually only have two options: 1 or 3 minutes.
3) It defaults to 4k.
4) The time-date stamp is MUCH bigger with a FitCamX watermark. I like it. You can turn this off in the settings. You can also change how you want the date/time to look

Our new puppy constantly picks up mulch that we have around our lawn in our backyard. I'm considering getting rid of it and putting something else down.

 

That's a little extreme getting rid of the puppy!
I did have 3 German Shepherds at one point in time.

 

Punished it on trails at Windrock OHV park today - another outing tomorrow. Took one hit on an aluminum skid today (not sure which one) but haven't looked at damage yet. Didn't feel that bad.

Felt something in the back catch too while dropping off a ledge - don't see bumper cover or tailpipe damage so maybe the hitch? Closer inspection when i get home.

Glad I replaced the hitch mounted carrier with the ROF carrier because it definitely would have drug today. Haven't needed the spare yet but got out twice to check rear tires because it sounded like tires popping off wheels - must have been loose rocks rolling

 

New engine and cabin filter. Greased the drive lines and a oil change..giving 0w-30 mobil a try.

 

All I saw was new engine. I gotta get some rest.

 

Haha yeah just a quick engine swap. I should have been more clear. New engine air filter.

 

Naw, took me less than 15 mins to model up everything, about the same to print out the spacer.



And yes, 400A for the winch feed between the battery and the 6006 switch.

 

sourced short #14 & 1/4” ss shouldered lag bolts to try, and was able to swap out the salty rusted factory lags in each wheel well.

They're open like that for a reason and moisture will cause issues over time if you get into that space between too airtight but not watertight enough. Don't know that holder in particular but if there's not some gap already I'd model in some shallow cutouts near the top to allow some airflow.

 

Took it in for its second "free" oil change at the dealer. I have Talons Garage skids, but even so I removed the oil filter housing door before going in. Once I got home I checked for evidence they actually changed the filter (they did, it was a bit messy around that whole area). That's when I noticed this. At least it wasn't stripped or cross-threaded, guess I should consider myself lucky.

 

Thanks for the heads up! Yes, there are two provisions in the top (clear) cap that allows about 2mm of clearance on both long sides. Also, the ends where the crimp lugs enter also have clearance around them.


Also, I'm thinking of mounting this fuse holder along the inside fender wall so hopefully it will be protected of any underspray coming up from below the engine/front diff areas.


The main goal behind this spacer is to provide electrical isolation/short protection, I just didn't like the more exposed terminal blocks without the spacer.

 

Worth taking off all skids before any dealer trip.

 

Oil change & my wifey has bought new OEM rotors & pads & open country 265/70/17s. The inferno is at 96k miles. Still stock but she loves it & I was happy she picked her new favorite tires
