My heat shield came completely off and was just resting on the body of the exhaust for a while. I finally took it in to a Tuffy, thinking they would unbolt the exhaust and replace the shield. The guy actually says, "I really don't think you need it. The gap between the exhaust and floor boards is 8 or more inches, so it won't harm anything to have it gone." But my suspicion is, why would Toyota put it there if it is not necessary?
    Any thoughts or similar experiences?

It’s a worst case scenario protection. Personally I would want it but people have removed it without issues.
